Neat knife kit for kids
on: November 16, 2010, 04:50:46 PM
You may have to be a FB lackey to see it:

http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/pages/Nathans-Wooden-Knife-Kit-/322324384786

Basically a guy named Glenn Klecker, who designed the CRKT NIRK knife and the Skeletool for Leatherman wanted a knife kit that was safe for his young son, Nathan.  Glenn and Nathan put their heads together and designed and built this wooden knife kit, which they then sold to CRKT, and I am pretty certain will be produced.

Sharp eyed members will recognize this kit as something that Bob and I encountered at SHOT last year!

Pretty neat!

I have seen similar at a knife making site I frequent occasionally.  They have a lock back like this one and a slip joint 3 blade stockman type knife.  Theirs has a contrasting scale of walnut or something similar.  I would have to look again.

It certainly is.  When we talked to Glenn last year he told us about how the design came about and I'm pretty certain the "spring" is bamboo.

I bought two of those Jameson kits last year and they are not very good.  They were not able to stand  up to anything my son put them through, plus they have metal pins, so you can't permanently assemble them.  The worst part is that they are tiny for kids to try and use.  They may be okay as a novelty, but not for a kid to play with.  If I understand correctly, the kit that Def showed is oversized for little hands like yound kids and is much more sturdy.  I think that would work much better as a learning tool for kids.  I saw the FB video and it only took him a couple minutes to put it together.

Def, pick up some for me at SHOT.  I see that CRKT is going to be handing out free samples.  WHoo Hoooo

I actually have two of these kits- the designer sent them to me for evaluation, then asked that I keep it under my hat for the time being as he wasn't certain what CRKT had in mind for launching them.  I will post a video of me assembling it soon, but I doubt I'll be able to do it as fast or as well as Nathan did in the video above- after all, he co-designed it!

I may have to mod one though- it would be neat to see what the various folks here could do with it!

Not sure what they are saying exactly, but the kid review the Nathan's Knife Kit is cute.  Any German's out there who can translate what she is saying?
