I quite carrying a defensive knife.I now carry a SW Model 642 loaded with 38 cal +P hollow points.I really don't care much for close up work.

I wish I could get a CCW in my county, but they do not believe a citizen should be able to protect themselves.

I carried a weapon for a long time as an LEO.I feel naked without it.I don't live in a high crime area but ya never know. It's ashamed that law abiding citizens can't get a CCW in every state.

Amen to that. They issue them in my state just not anywhere remotely close to where I live.

You may want to look at a kershaw leek as it has a super thin profile but still fits in the hands well, fast deployment and has a aggressive blade style IE good for stabbing but can also double as a great utility blade. Also comes in a variety of materials such as all stainless or g10. Usually you can pick one up at your local walmart as well.

I personally am not a big fan of knives for self defense but then again I live in Arizona where you can legally conceal a handgun without a permit  :D

Ain't that the Truth. I've been thinking about applying for a LTC, but it's a little too risky for me.

Firstly I want to agree with the training requirement for defensive use of blades. Secondly I would like to point out that having training in knife combat, I do not see a practical defensive reason to carry a blade. If I were in a threatening situation, drawing a knife is unlikely to be a primary focus. Just remember that you are likely putting yourself in more danger by carrying a "defensive knife".

I am surprised that no one has suggested the Benchmade 940. It has everything you are looking for. Thin, light, 3.5 inch blade, fast deployment, great blade shape.

Thank you for the heads up on the Benchmade. I actually am thinking of dropping a defensive blade from my EDC as I do not want to carry it in my left pocket do to the new phone and the right pocket does not work for me because I already carry EVERYTHING in the right pocket and the clip from my EDC blade is tearing up the leather on my steering wheel. I will feel naked without it, but I will give it a try.

Hey Cap'n S... did you consider a Spydie Military?  They make a slimline version IIRC.  Also a Police model is very slim, and they're not even assisted, so no worries on the legality of it.  I also hear you on the issue of avoiding complications with LEO's... I've had friends have knives taken from them by LEO's simply because they liked them and wanted to throw their weight around, not because they were illegal.

I am actually going to drop a folder from my EDC for a while. I actually have a Spyderco Tenacious that I love.  :tu:

Yea you read it correctly. It's just not fitting into my EDC now. I really wish I did not have to drop it but we will see how it goes.

Ya gotta do what ya gotta do...

I go through my cycling/EDC bag every few months and do an inventory and assessment.  It's a good idea; you never know what you'll find lurking around in there... I'm sure that's true for most of us.  Over time you develop a feel for what you need, and refine your load-out appropriately.

I'm in a new job now and am away from my family for a couple months at a time, and my EDC needs when I'm away working are drastically different and reduced than when I'm home with my family.  But as a general rule I try to keep one each of a SAK, a multi, a single cell LED flashlight, and a folder in my bag at all times.  Even if I'm carrying very little on my person, what's in my bag handles 99% of the situations I encounter.

It's taken a little bit of getting used to for me, not carrying so much on my person.  It just feels weird to not have as many things in my pockets as I've gotten used to over the years...

When I go back home to be with my family over the holidays, I'll go back to my old load-out and I'll feel more comfortable again.  :)
