Suggestions on slim EDC knife.
on: October 02, 2011, 06:53:20 AM
I might be in the market for a new EDC blade and need some input. There are a few requirements. It must be a folder and have a pocket clip. If the clip is not reversible when the knife is clipped in the right front pocket the blade must rest against the edge of the pocket. I would like it to be a straight edge but half serrated will work if its all I can find. I am not trying to break the bank but will shell out the cash if it fits all my needs. Last but not least it must be very thin. I need to be able to reach into my pocket without it interfering with anything. I know these requirements might be a bit hard to fill but please help me if you can. Thank you in advance.  :tu:

Sog Tac mini auto. Very slim, reversible pocket clip. Strong and sturdy. I carry one daily.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

How long do you want the blade to be and does the kershaw torsion bar assist count as an auto to you?  A centofante with the clip might be pretty sweet, I have one without a clip, it's nearly invisible in pocket.

You know I was thinking about it and an auto might work out as long as there is no lock. By lock I mean to keep the blade from opening, not closing.

Do you mean thin as in blade width or thin as in body thickness?

It is hard to explain but I just need it to be as thin as possible. I will look for a picture to help explain if I can.

Yeah I know what you mean.  This  centofante was a pain in the butt because it is quite small in the hand and the safety kept getting in the way.  I tightened it down and now it doesn't bother me at all and I haven't had any problems at all with it opening up on its own.

Still it is a little tough to get used to as an EDC because of its size but then again it depends on your EDC needs.

It would be purely a defensive blade. I hope the blade never gets used as that would be messy affair. I have a VIC Camper I use for all my cutting task. I do need it to be able to be deployed quickly and reliably though.

I should have been more specific. A assisted opening knife (which are legal in CA). Also switch blades or Auto's are legal to own and carry in California as long as the blade is less than 2". I had a friend steal my CA legal switch blade which was my most prized knife I ever owned. It was fully custom made and cannot be replaced.

I believe you can also own any size switchblade in California as long as it stay in your home or is transported in the trunk of your car, but don't quote me on that.

Oh those are just schematics  ::) haha. Yes you're right, but for me there is no point in carrying/owning one if I can't leave the house with it. But I totally understand if it's a custom piece, and that's a shame you no longer have yours.

Assisted opening you're fine, but I've heard stories of people getting hassled by LEO's and getting their assisted opening folders confiscated.

Yes I have also heard of LEO'S not knowing the law and wrongfully confiscating assisted openers which is why I tend to stay away from them. I might have to carry one in the mean time until I can find somrthing to fit my needs.

Just to be clear you can legally carry a switch blade in CA as long as the blade is under 2". Not sure if you caught that in my post but if you did sorry for repeating myself.

:salute: more power to ya!! As far as I know, I couldn't get away with it if the blade was >2". In my opinion, there's not point in carrying a folder that small. Especially if it has to be deployed in an emergency role. As much as I use my knives as tool, I need something to inflict damage if the situation called for it.

O I completely agree with you on that. I would not carry a sub 2" switch blade as a defensive blade.

Fortunately, I live in a County that doesn't have ridiculous Ordinances or anything. Anytime I step out of the House with my Flash II I'm confident I won't have any issues. And yes, I did catch that, it just slipped my mind when I first posted. Thanks Capn'  :salute:

Before this goes any further - do you have any training using a knife in a defensive manner?

Sure don't.

.....

You really, really, really, really, REALLY need to train how to use a knife in a self defense situation before you even consider carrying one for that purpose.

With no training, a knife in a self defense situation is about as useful as a sack of lemon meringue.  I forget the odds off of the top of my head, but they are overwhelmingly in favor of you simply dropping the knife or flinging it about 20 feet away trying to draw it.  Like, 90%+, and those are with a fixed blade knife.  Good luck trying to extract and then open a folding knife when your fine motor control is shot to crap because of an adrenaline dump.

I truly do respect you opinion, but I am not going to not carry a defensive blade because I have not trained with one. You are probably right that 90% of people without training will drop it or not be able to deploy it correctly and I might be one of them, but I am willing to take my chances.
