Challenge LM vs SAK on German TV
on: October 11, 2011, 08:04:28 PM
Hi mates.

The German TV station Pro7, well known for the dumbest "sciene" magazines ever (Galileo), had a Victorinox vs Leatherman challenge today. A Leatherman Wave vs. a Vic (no name mentioned, I guess it is a Huntsman)

First round: Opening blade, can opener and screwdriver. Winner: Vic 2:1

Second round: Speed test. Wood cutting, can opening, paper cutting using the scissors: Winner: LM 2:1 (Vic won the scissors test)

Third round: unscrew a Philips screw, a bolt and cutting a seatbelt: Who would have guessed, LM won both screw tests (Vic had no Philips screwdriver and no pliers) Vic won seatbelt cutting. So, 2:1 for LM

Destruction test: Drop from 7m height on concrete: LM won, Vic lost a scale and the tweezers. Final: Test to crush the tools. Vic broke at 8 tons of pressure, LM took 40 tons (it did not break, but was unable to open anymore, so both tools were dead).

Well, I am impressed how stupid a "test" can be. IF I wanted to compare a SAK vs a LM I would have used a SAK with Philips and Screwdriver against the Wave. This test was made to let LM win it, just not fair. I like LM, but in a fair test "Vic Spirit vs LM Wave" or maybe even "Vic Classic vs LM Style" or "Vic Swiss Champ vs Juice" I´m unable to guess the winner in advance. Galileo is dumb TV for dumb people. But: funny to see! My next test is: Leatherman Wave vs Surefire Backup. Which is brighter?

While it sounds like they set up the Leatherman to win I would love to see this on TV here. They definately should have put a Wave up against a VIC Spirit. Would have been much more fair.

Did they not try and use the end of the Vic. can opener as a phillips driver?  Obviously not as good as a full driver but its actually not bad at all.
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

They did, but the screw did not fit.

Yeah then we could add the chiselling/scraping test, the punch a new hole in the belt test, the speed to deploy bottle opener use it and put it away test, the sunken phillips head screw test, the pry tool test, and the just how may tools can you get in a small space test.  :D :D

Vic may lose it's advantage on the scissors test though  :P

In truth - silly TV aside - even pitching very similar tools head to head is very subjective. Give three guys a Skeletool, an Octane, and a Zillatool Jnr and they might all have different favourites. Give me a Wave and a Spirit and I'll prefer different tools in different places - I know because I already do ... Wave preferred at work, Spirit preferred everywhere else   :tu:

(Clip won't play for me BTW)
