Sorry Jie!
on: October 20, 2011, 12:42:47 PM
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/halifax-vancouver-win-33-billion-in-shipbuilding-sweepstakes/article2206911/

My province, one of the poorest in Canada was announced yesterday as the recipient of a 25 billion dollar contract to build new ships for the Navy over the next 30 years.  This promises to be a huge and much needed boost to our economy and struggling shipyards.  Throughout most of our history, Nova Scotia has been world famous for shipbuilding but over the last few decades many of our yards have closed and many skilled tradespeople have been forced to leave to find decent work, while others have been forced to take menial work or just go bust.

It was officially announced last night that the contract was coming here, and there is a great amount of celebrating going on in Halifax despite the heavy rainfall we are experiencing.

While I'm not a native Bluenoser (see- even the colloquial name for people from Nova Scotia revolves around a world famous ship built here!) I can certainly appreciate what this means for this corner of the country.

Plus, since I own an income property and am within walking distance to one of the major shipyards, this will eventually be an excellent opportunity for me personally, which will certainly trickle down to better funding for Multitool.org and it's members.

I just don't understand why Canada doesn't design (or perhaps build off of an ally's design) their own subs too, though... I mean Canada should technically be asking for their money back from England for their latest "subs;" sloppy seconds isn't really nice when it comes to a peacekeeping, underwater vessel.  :-\

Hooray for some new ships down the line, though. :D

That's great, I just hope it doesn't make the place too industrialized, it's one of the most beautiful places I've been to.

As for Canada design and build own sub, we can't even afford to buy helicopters that doesn't drop out of sky by itself, certainly no money for that.

No one in Canada understands that either...

Although the subs we bought from the British are lethally effective- they've already killed one of our sailors.  When we figure out how to aim them, imagine how dangerous they'll be to the bad guys?

It amazes me we are spending money on used diesel subs when Canada is now and always has been a world leader in nuclear power.

I could never figure that one out myself. We most definitely have the technology, and the money to do it properly.

Up until yesterday we were having a bad time too.  Shipyards have had problems all over since Navies in general aren't expanding nearly as much as air and ground forces.  I don't think there has been a significant naval battle wince WWII has there?

How many accidents have the Victoria/Upholders had in Canadian service? I remember a fire on one that killed a sailor, have there been others? As for nuke boats, the technology to build submarine reactors requires a LOT of R&D, more so than civilian generating plants. The US was able to put a TON of resources into its' early nukes to get them into service. The Russians had severe issues with their powerplants in early nukes because they were rushed into service. Many Russian subs in the Hotel/Echo/November classes suffered reactor accidents. Even today, the Indian and Brazilian Navies have both wanted to build nuclear subs for quite a while, but the resources are lacking. The Indians just finally launched their first after many years of trying. I'm sure the US Navy has had a hand in preventing a Canadian nuclear sub as well, the Arctic is their playground.

The last MAJOR surface fight was at Leyte Gulf, October 24-26, 1944. There have been numerous smaller engagements, the Israeli Navy has fought some, and the US Operation Praying Mantis in 1988 in the Gulf vs. Iran is another example. What can I say, I'm a naval history buff. :)

Canada has been responsible for nuclear reactors in almost every form for many years- I'm certain if there was any incentive to build them into a submersible, we'd manage it.  If there was any incentive of course...  ::)

And yes, the sailor that was killed in the fire is the only casualty- the subs have been in dry dock since then.  How do I know?  Two of them have been in dry dock about a mile away from my house for the last couple of years, and I pass by them almost every day.

That is one of three songs I never want to hear again.  Working bars in Halifax means you hear Barrett's Privateers, Sweet Caroline and Brown Eyed Girl done with varying levels of talent every night.

Makes me somewhat ill really.

Major battles or not, you still need some ships to take care of Nigerian princes with lottery tickets, spammers, Somalian pirates.

There's a justification to spend billions of dollars on new aircraft carriers if ever there was one- after all, three guys in a patchwork dinghy with AK47's are a serious threat!   :ahhh

Not aircraft carriers, just something larger than a lifeboat but smaller than a battleship. :P
