Name some good reliable OHO pocket knives
on: October 26, 2011, 07:04:20 PM
I've long time carried a SOG Flash II and find it to be Ok except for one issue:  It has a safety which sometimes engages itself so it does not deploy.  This is not good.  I desire something reliable for OHO for when I really need it.  Sure, I could disable the safety, but I don't feel like taking it apart.

I do not want an automatic knife because in my experience, side openers have a tendency to open in my pocket and OTF knives collect lint and do not always deploy.

So... Can anyone recommend something at a decent price?

Oh, wow, you might have to narrow that down a little.

Price?
Size?
By OHO, do you mean assisted opening (I kinda got that from your post)?
Usage (heavy duty, EDC, self-defense, general)?
Any country-of-origin requirements?

Edit:  Oh, also you can just put a drop of superglue or contact cement on the safety of your Flash to keep it from engaging. I would suggest the latter as it's easy to scrape off later.

For a non-locker you would find a Spyderco UKPK hard to beat.

Spyderco and Benchmade are worth looking at.

I'm looking for something cheap as in around $50.

Assisted opening is desired, but will consider others so long as it does not have the CRKT type "easy" opening stud that presses through to the back of the handle.  I also require a pocket clip.

My main uses are shredding cardboard, cutting rope and slicing through plastic clam style packaging.  I also need said knife to function effectively for self-defense.  I obviously do not want a d/e or dagger blade, but at the same time should be able to slice deep and fully penetrate a perpetrator's flesh.

I do not care about its origin so long as it meets my requirements and is not too shabby looking.

I was waiting for someone else to chime in first. :-[

I'm not a huge folder carrying guy, but I must say the Spyderco mechanisms are so silky smooth, and many of them can be just flipped open (with a strong wrist flip).

Another vote for Spyderco.

Chrissy, the UKPK is an awesome knife, however, I need a locking blade for this particular EDC.

Spyderco is nice, can't go wrong with a Delica but no Spydercos on the market have assist mechanisms.  It's just not something they make.

When I hear "reliable assisted folder" I immediately think Kershaw - their Speedsafe mechanism is one of the best.

Chinese line:
Clash
Tremor
Asset
Compound
Drone
Burst
OSO Sweet
RJ1 and RJ2
Volt 2

American Made line under $50 Street:
Whirlwind
Leek
Needs Work
Junkyard Dog
Packrat (if you're lucky)

Nice thing about Kershaw is that all the knives in the line have Lifetime Warranties, foreign or US made.  The problem is that handle sizes differ greatly among the offerings so it's often difficult to find something that'll fit your hand without have a chance to play with them in person.  All the knives listed have steel that will hold an edge as well as or better than your Flash II.

If you like flipper knives but don't specifically need an assisted opening, there's also the Skyline and NRG folders, as well as the blade launcher-equipped knives from Leatherman (knives with the suffix -L after the model number).  Thes knives open very quickly and reliably but don't use a spring assist.

I wouldn't suggest the Zero Tolerance line as though they are excellent knives, they are very *tactical* looking and you might run in to problems using them at work.

I would also suggest staying away from SOG - while their stuff is generally solid, there's better to be found for the price these days and SOG just hasn't really kept up.

Wow... it's been a while browsing but some of these Kershaws look right up my alley.  I just haven't kept up with the manufacturers lately.  I've decided on a Leek w/ aluminum handle (lighter weight).  Thanks for your input I appreciate it a lot!

The Leek is an awesome knife. When I'm carrying a dedicated folder, that's the one I go to, 9 times out of 10. :tu:

If you can wait a bit, you may want to consider the new BM HD knife. Its a decent chinese steel, flipper style assisted open titanium frame lock. Really nice looking blade. Should hit retail just north of 50 bucks.

Um... are you talking about the TI-Fender?  It's already started to hit distributors at the ~$90 mark.  That may just be for the numbered first production runs, but I don't see it taking a 45% discount for the second runs on.

I'll admit it does look freaking cool - first flipper design from Benchmade, in a titanium framelock to boot.

I have handled or had many of the blades here, nice, perdy, functional dedicated blades, but why not a Victorinox One Hand Trekker?

it's the one I reach for now, truly inexpensive and has so much to offer besides just a single blade! (had to mention it) ;)

The OHT is a great knife; other options would be a Delica, Mini Grip (can be found for the target price sometimes...), Buck Vantage Pro, aforementioned Kershaws, and others I can't think of at the moment. :/

Yea I was talking about the ti-fender. Most places will show it listed at 90ish because bm follows a map program. The place I get my benchmades usually does 30-40% off from the list price. I can't say for sure what the actual street price will be since its not yet available.

For me, the OHO folders that have never failed are:

Large:
SOG Flash II
Leatherman e55bx
Buck Vantage 345BKS

Small:
SOG FLash I
Leatherman e33bx
(don't have yet, but I have faith) Buck Vantage 340BKS

ANYTHING Spyderco!  No other knife I've ever tried has the same ease of opening as a Spydie.
