Looking at my Leatherman knife...it looks like a 6 point (torx) screw.  So Leatherman used/uses two kinds of bits in their products?  The 5 star security and the torx?

A T10 bit is literally a HAIR too big...

I wanted to loosen the blade a hair, and see what it was like without the pocket clip..

As far as Leatherman multitools go...
I think they started using the 5-star security screws on the SideClip model, then the original Wave model, then the Charge models and New Waves when they first came out.

A couple of years ago (2005?) they switched to 6-star security screws. Depending on when they were produced, some New Waves, Charge XTi's, and Charge Ti's have 6-star screws. All Charge TTi's should have 6-stars.

Sorry, I don't have any of the knives.  :(

Anybody ever try to dremel the little tab in the middle of the screw down and then use a regular torx bit? ???

I read that somebody did that once either here or elsewhere.

Wish it were that easy.  :(  You could grind out the tab on the 6-stars and use regular bits, but there is no need to, as 6-star security bits are relatively easy to find. (Our local hardware store carries them.)

But they don't make 5-star torx bits without the security tab hole, so it really doesn't help any to grind out the tab on those screws.

Today at Pep Boys I found an assortment of security bits...all torx though (tiny sizes; with and without 'pins' in the center...)

I bought a little driver that included in the handle 14 (tiny) double sided bits, and a cool extendable wire neck to get the bits to hard to reach areas.  The Torx bit I was looking for was in the assortment, a T9.

Things just got better, got an email from the seller saying they made a mistake on the postage costs and that i will be refunded £1 !! Its not much (in terms of money) but i'm impressed that the seller chose to do it even on such a low priced auction. kudos to him!

Are you sure it is 5 star and not a standard 6 star security bit. They did not have a picture of TTXR10TPE2 but the others on the page looked as though they were 6 not 5 star. So anyone tempted I would phone first to make sure.

I'm telling you man, I bought 2 from Snap on and that's the part number, 5 point I have it on my hands and works fine with my old wave, new wave, and my ti has one side 5 point and the other side 6 point.

But that's the right one!

I know this is a very old thread, but I just ordered this set of 5 star security bits off of eBay for $7.49 & free shipping.  The nice thing about them is they include doubles on the TS10 so you only need one set to take a tool apart.  If you need to work on any of the old tools this is what you need.

We don't mind old threads being bumped at all  Sometimes it is encouraged because there is so much knowledge in some of these old threads :tu:

Nice find and thanks for sharing :like:
