What is your favorite Benchmade Griptilian model?
on: November 04, 2011, 12:10:35 AM
I turned in an old benchmade I've had for years whose lock broke for repairs and they said they couldn't fix it and offered me either an identical knife (same maker, same knife) but it doesn't say Benchmade, just Harley Davidson on the blade...not interested....or a $100.00 promo code to buy another knife.  Took the code and have been looking at Griptilians for some time now but not sure which one I like best.

Any suggestions/experiences?
Thanks!

As seen here: http://www.knifeworks.com/dougritterminirskmk1stonewasheds30vbladepre-order.aspx

Don't own it but I'd like one.

Or the H2O in PE

I have the H2O in P.E and to tell you the truth I wish I'd have bought the regular 154cm
Griptilian.  Not that there is anything terribly wrong with the H2O but it's not as smooth
an opener as the others and the pocket clip is not a strong.  Other than that once you
put a proper bevel on the edge the griptilian is a great edc.

550 or 555.  I like the opening hole rather than thumbstuds.

A knife that I have wanted for ages, and yet still haven't got.

This thread needs some pics I reckon.
I'm back!!

okay uncle Ben :salute:

my BMs

I agree, 154cm is all around good and easy to maintain and I now prefer the stud for the lower profile in my pocket (you use the axis for opening most times anyway)

and I've forever drooled over the orange scaled ones! I like visibility, if I could get one of them...

Thanks for the input all!   Are there any other Benchmade knives you might suggest that are no more than the $150.00 mark?  I'm looking for another user, like the big thumb holes (though not opposed to thumbscrew) and a folder.  Was looking at the HK's on their site, but think they are more showy, focusing more on blade look than on solid utilitarian usage, but if I'm incorrect let me know.  So far I'm leaning toward the 550HG Griptilian.

Also, why do so many prefer the straight blade to the combo blade?  I might be interested in the Olive colored one but it has a combo blade.

many people prefer PE (plain edge) because it is easier to sharpen and maintain, unless your proficient in sharpening (and most of us are not) especially in the field.

serrations are best for "tearing" and what they are designed for, but a good sharp plain edge will do just as good a job.

combo-edges are suppose to be the "best of both worlds" but they just annoy us lol

some people luv serrations (gAwd bless em) but most do not that I know, talked to, read about.

Another problem with combo-edges is that one simply does not get enough of a straight edge to slice something all the way through without encountering the serrations, which may simply tear into the object being sliced.
