Buck 110's with blade play
on: December 12, 2011, 08:06:53 PM
I've owned around four 110's and they have all had slight side to side blade play and while this doesn't bother me I've read loads of threads and posts were this has been discussed and lots of people have replied saying theirs have zero blade play . How much pressure are people putting on the blades to determine the amount of blade play ? I was shocked when I depressed the lock bar and tested the side to side movement with the blade half close with the lock button still depressed , it was quite a lot and far more then when the blade was locked open .Does all this really matter if the lock up is secure and we use the blade as it is intended to be used with no prying etc. this should effect the way we use it and it shouldn't get any worse . I know theres quite a lot of 110 fans on here so this should make for a good discussion  .And of course pics are most welcome  :)

well I'm very new to the world of the 110, but I've just had a check of mine and can say it's only got the very tiniest amount of lateral play, and no vertical whatsoever.  Personally I've never worried about what the blade is doing when it's not fully opened and in place, but trying it your way doesn't seem to have any notable difference anyway. :)

Blade play in knives will eventually build upon itself and get worse, as lateral movement will introduce extra stresses on the pivot.

Buck will fix you up if you're worried about it, their CS is some of the best in the business.

I have two 110's I bought new.
One I bought 30 years ago and one titanium 560 I have it for 10 years now.
Both have side bladeplay from new, from the time I have them.
I hate both because of that and they are hardly used for now.
They never did leaved the drawer for years now.

its a shame you hate them i think you should send them to me for some love  ::)  :D

ive had a few bucks and none had any play, i have heard of some issues but Bucks after service is amazing and i know you would get them back with no play,

here are my favourites, 2000 112 and 1989 110 no play in both, 110 got fixed by buck as spring was broke,

I just had a look at three 110s (one paperstone) out of which only one had, probably, been used and an 112 and saw no bladeplay.... I used a reasonable amount of force, but was not trying to break them.
The only lockback I have with noticable side to side bladeplay, especially when unlocked, is a chinese 110 clone I have had for over 20 years; but it is solid enough when locked.
Maybe you are just SuperStrong!!!!  :D

I checked all 10 of my 110's and they pretty much all have side to side
except a couple, and all of them have a bit of up and down which is normal
with back locks.  The one's that don't have the side to side just happen to
be old around '65, or '66's.
Unless it's excessive I think it's pretty normal for a 110 to have a bit of play. :)

I just took a look at my 110, and there is a tiny bit of vertical play, no lateral movement at all.
There's no such thing as "Too pretty to carry".  There's only "Too pretty NOT to carry"...... >:D

I sometimes wonder also how much pressure is being applied by some of these folks
to determine blade play or not?  I think it's a pretty subjective topic.

In the old days before the internet, forums, and chat I never was really bothered by
how a blade centers, blade play, and lil' flaws in metal.  Now with the exchange of info
it has me ponder from time to time.  ;)

My 560 you can feel the side bladeplay with no presure
when open up, but my 110 you can hear when open up
the bladeplay when you shake it sideways, its ratle. >:(

While I don't have any buck knife, I have this one which is a kind of clone of the 110 (that's a little smaller, maybe like the 55 model). It has no lateral bladeplay but has a tiny up and down one. That's a good quality piece. It's the 3rd from the top.
