on: December 23, 2011, 03:47:05 AM
Be careful what you ask for.  ::)  Moderating is one of the most frustrating things you can do on a forum. A total thankless job that people do because they care.

That is all!   :D

Is there a problem on your forum John?  I agree with you by the way- sometimes it seems a Moderator can't do a thing right!

I hear you. I moderated a local forum for a few years. Mind you, that forum was a magnet for all the local nutters...so it quickly wore me down.

Never been a forum moderator - and have no desire to become one.

I'm a "moderator" of sorts in real world scenario's and this is my escape from the trappings of the hats I wear offline. I can see what you mean about it feeling like a thankful task, and you can never be "off duty". I've felt that VERY often in the stuff I've done - but sometimes it's just because I'm not listening. I know the members here frequently applaud the efforts of the staff here, and in the real world there's often praise aplenty too - but sometimes you're so tied up in the dynamics or trying to get the balance right you don't notice how much people really do appreciate the efforts. Of course, sometimes it's just because the miserable buggers don't tell you  :P

Luckily here at MTO there's a good team of suckers... I mean moderators that take care of all that...  :pok:

seriously, it's not an easy job sometimes and the best thing you can do is step back and let someone else calm down issues...

also sometimes it's hard to not let your actual opinion out as people seem to think you need to be impartial as a moderator...  :ahhh
The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.

Moderating here isn't too bad, all of the members here are very pleasant people who need little in the way of policing.  That and the fact Allan is on here so much he almost always beats me to the punch. ::)

However the pay does indeed suck. ;)

Ain't that the truth!

I've always suspected that the best thing I can do for our Mod Team here is provide as much support for them.  We have a Moderators Only forum here where Mods can discuss different things, get a clean take on something or vent of someone or something riles them up, and I have to say it's been very useful on a number of occasions.

The other thing I insist on is that the Mods here act however they see fit, rather than having a series of "rules and regulations" to enforce.  The Mods here have all been around for a while, know what the forum is about and have a good feel for the place.  Some have let things slide that I wouldn't have, others have acted on things I wouldn't have bothered to get involved in, but that's entirely fine because I trust their judgement- otherwise, why would they still be Mods?

So far it's worked out pretty well and I've no complaints about the way the guys do things, and I have gotten very few complaints about them from members so I guess that's a good sign!

Oh, and John, feel free to link to your forum- I noticed you sidestepped telling people what it was.  If you were doing that because you thought it might not be advisable to link to another forum, no worries, go for it!   :tu:

I moderate a different forum as well, unrelated to multitools or EDC. It does require a lot of extra time, thankfully I can check it at work so my home time is less interrupted.

Well if you need another moderator I'm in. I spend a lot of time here, in fact my other forums have all went cold to me. I'm no slouch but not 100% up to date with all the lingo but I learn extremely fast :D. Just a thought.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

Thanks for the offer Steve.

What usually happens (in case anyone is wondering) is that one of the Mods or myself will start wondering if we need a new Mod and will start a thread in the Mods Only forum about it.  Then others will join in and say whether or not they think we need anyone else, and who they might consider for the position.  We end up with a short list after a day or two, and a decision as to whether or not we need to fill a spot.  If it's decided that we do need some additional help then we look closely at the newly formed short list and after a bit of a debate we have a vote, and whoever gets the most votes gets a PM asking if they are interested.  If they are, then they become Mods, and if not then we go on to the next member.  Sometimes we end up pretty far down the list which is how we got Mat!  :P

At any rate it is very much a democratic process, and like anything else here it's pretty organic.  It also ensures that the existing team will support the "New Guy" since he/she was their choice.  The down side is that it can lead to "Good Ol' Boy" syndrome in which folks only nominate their friends, but I think we have been doing pretty good so far- I mean no one liked Allan and yet he made it in!

By the way, with regards to the shots I'm taking at existing Mods, I only kid the ones I love.  You'll notice I didn't make fun of Gareth....  :pok:
