Prayers Please

My stepfather had a stroke this morning. I have very few details at the moment, anxiously waiting for word. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

That's terrible news. Strokes are horrible things as you'll probably be left in the dark without any kind of updates for a while, as most of the time all anyone can do is wait and see what happens. It's a heap of torture all around, and my thoughts, for what they are worth, are with you and your family.

). I spoke with my mother a little while ago, and she doesn't know the results of the scans and such. He IS conscious and talking, which is great news. I'm heading to the hospital in a bit. I appreciate the thoughts and will keep you posted.

That's great news!

The three ways to test global brain function (ie how widespread the damage is) are

1. Speech (incredibly complicated process involving cognitive function, sensory (hearing) and motor skills)

2. Gait (really tests balance and strength)

3. Eye movement. Integrated function from front to back of brain.

If those are all intact, he's likely going to be ok!

Thanks again, everyone! I just got back from the hospital, and got great news-he's coherent, speaking, and the MRI didn't show any bleeding. He does have a bit of trouble speaking and his left side is weak and uncoordinated, he will definitely need therapy. But, it could have been TONS worse. The docs want him to stay in the ICU for another day or two for observation, but he will be home by the weekend! A great ending to a day that really started out smurfty..........

I just got back from the hospital. He's lucid and able to move and talk, but it's a bit worse than it was before. They're running a whole bunch of tests, and he will be there for a couple of days. Might have to go to a rehab

. My mom is doing ok, which is important too. We'll see what happens.
