I HATE cold and snow
on: January 13, 2012, 02:12:48 PM
You would think since I've lived in it ALL my life I wouldn't hate it as bad as I do. Its freezing cold outside, snowed like crazy last night, and its windy. BTW I HATE cold weather and snow. :ahhh:  Thanks for letting me vent. :D

You and me both.  Considering that I work outside in it most of the time, I hate it even more.

Here on the coast the problem isn't the cold, it's the wet, which drives the cold right into you.  When I was growing up in Manitoba it was a lot colder than it ever gets here, but it was ok because there was no humidity.  You could just dress for it and it was fine, but here on the coast you are pretty well soaked in an hour or so causing you to feel a lot colder, plus your clothes weigh a lot more.  It's just not fun.

I don't much care for it as it has a rather beastly effect on my mobility, but I recommend getting yourself some seriously comfy thermals to wear underneath, a good hat and some nice windproof gloves. Makes the world of difference on the miserable scale :)

We dont even have rain  :(

Half the reason I go to SHOT each year is to get away from the cold, rain and snow we have here!  Of course that plan backfired a few years ago when SHOT just happened to coincide with one of the very few rainstorms in Nevada.  It didn't occur to me right away, but it shouldn't have been raining in the desert!  Looking back, I just assume that the Las Vegas Chamber Of Commerce imported it just to make me feel at home!  :D

I wouldn't say I work out in it but I do drive in it and at all my stops on my tour I have to get out walk to the gate, fence, fan, or lock and check everything so it sucks. Were to get more of that white crap today.

I'm out on foot for hours at a time in the wind, rain, sleet, freezing rain, snow... you name it.  And, since it's a dockyard, it's even wetter than anywhere else because you have the ocean spray too.

Makes for a very unpleasant job sometimes.

It's been raining here too for the last few days.
I got house-phobic today and went for a walk while a thunder storm was rumbling south of us.
It was quite interesting :)

Some days it does.  I'm a cargo surveyor, which basically means I inspect cargo and equipment for potential issues and/or damage when it changes hands from one organization to the next.  Given my location, most of my work is at dockyards and involves items coming off trucks or trains and going on ships or vice versa.

Perhaps the worst job I do is cars- each week thousands of European cars get dropped off at a local yard (creatively called "Autoport"  ::) ) and I have to go through and inventory them as well as assess the condition of each and every one of them.  If I don't, then my client, the shipping company can be held accountable for damage that happens after their responsibility ends as they'd have no proof that the vehicle didn't arrive in that condition.

I have too different a perspective to really comment further.  I think I'll have to move to Cali for a few years to experience your end of the discussion so I can reply accordingly!  :D

All I know was everyone was complaining about the cold in Orlando a few years ago when I was there and it was pretty well the same temperature as our summer.  :D

I have very good friends that we visit in Northern Idaho so I do know a little bit about being cold. With that being said, go to the Huntington Beach pier in January and it gets pretty darn cold. Brrrr!!!

I started with one 5 cigar Humidor, then got a bigger humidor, then got a Coolidor set-up but the problem was that in the summer it gets quite hot here, 40C+, so the cigars would sweat because of the heat and go mouldy. I always froze the cigars before storing so I did not have any beasty problems.

So I rigged that Frigidor system that keeps them at 18C and keeps the moisture in too. (Actually this is my second one, as the first one broke after about 5 years) It is a Haier branded one which is a good brand for wine coolers. (Copper piping inside) Most of the winter it does not go on at all, since I have it in my cool, basement, workshop/office.

I use a fan and Cat litter beads and humidifiers to keep the humidity ok.
Still, I had to throw 3 boxes of, sensitive, Cubans in the summer after a drainage hole got blocked and the humidity rose too much... >:(

To tell the truth I have not bought any cigars in two years as I smoke very sparingly; sometimes I do not smoke for months.

I realised that I had plenty of cigars for several years, whilst still being able to mature the ones I wanted to mature (Have a look at Min Ron Nee's book) and after throwing away some of my really nice ones that I was saving  I decided to stop buying new ones and start working through them.

I am only now beginning to think about getting some more.

Ive cut back real far, i haven't had one in months, i used to have one every time i went out to mow the lawn, but we moved and don't have to anymore, but in the spring-fall when the neighbor has a fire, i go over to and sit out, its not often, that's why i went smaller, most of what i had went bad, and i was really pissed, luckily when we moved a little shop is around the corner, i could just about hit it with a baseball if i went out back and threw it. and he has what i like, so i really don't need to store any. here's what i wanted back home, when i had room.. That looks quite nice, though if you get a lot of light through the glass it could damage the cigars that are not in closed boxes.
It looks more like a Restaurant or posh bar humidor.
Some people have huge, walkthrough humidors; really impressive.
I usually buy from shops when I am abroad and find something new.
There are some cigar shops close to me too and I usesd to buy boxes with cubans when they had special, usually trying to shift older stock.
In  the long run it is cheaper to just buy a single and smoke it, rather than to buy boxes, cheaper per cigar, and see them go bad. I do, however, like to mature some cigars so it is hard to just buy them and smoke them immediately.

I moved from Colorado to Texas about 5 years ago.  When I got here I could tolerate any cold that Texas could offer and laugh at it.  The heat got me good though.  Now I work in a Collision shop with no A/C and poor heating in the winter.  I pretty much just go with it and don't complain anymore.  I can handle all heat texas has, I routinely work in Jeans and boots in 105 - 110 degree heat from May to August.  The cold here is kinda uncomfortable due to our humidity(surrounded by lakes where I live), but a good carhartt and you're fine.  It was 62 today and fantastic out, not a cloud in the sky.  It'll drop to about 30 tonight and cool everything off.

What's really funny is my wife.  She's from Montana, and our 60 degree weather has her in sweaters even inside.  She can't handle any cold below 70 degrees, yet she is dying to move back to Montana this summer.  I mean, it's virtually Canada South, and she can't wait to get back there!  The cold won't bother me but I know I will never see her shoulders again once we move there!

And Ash, come stay in Texas for a while and get nothing but crappy drizzle rain 3 times a year and you will miss your weather beyond belief!  I would give my left hex nut for snow right now.  It was miserable for me when I worked in it in Colorado but it still beats 110 degrees and changing my boxers and work shirt twice a day because I sweat through them!

Where I live I can't really complain about the weather, except a bit in the summer when the temperatures can go occasionally too high. But generally we have a pretty mild weather. An example for the next 10 days:
