New stuff from SOG

Here: clicky.

Most notably, a multi-use knife (Escape), some new lights, some knives with lights, a slippy (SlipZilla), and a crossbreed between a PowerPlier and a TooLogic plier tool (PowerDuo).

The PowerDuo looks interesting; I see the prototype uses hex fasteners, but I wonder if the tools are replaceable.  I'm thinking it's their interpretation of the Gerber Crucial or Leatherman Skeletool, minus the carabiner; still, it has a couple standard screwdrivers, a Phillips, plus bottle opener and can opener functions, so it doesn't seem too bad. :tu:

What interests me is that several of these new products are using 9Cr13 steel, which as I understand it is a moderate upgrade from the AUS8 and 8Cr steels they've been using before. The red-class Benchmade I EDC has a 9Cr13 blade and I've been pretty impressed with it.

The Powerduo is interesting, looks like an Arc lock on the blade as well.  The Slim Jim is kinda cool as well.  Most of the rest of it.... bleh.

9Cr18MoV is the steel used in the SOGs here.  9Cr13CoMoV as used by Benchmade is a substantially higher-end steel that has added Cobalt.

Oh, that's what I get for posting too early in the morning. 18CoMoV and 13MoV look pretty similar when written down.

I wonder, then, how it compares to whatever stainless they're using on their MTs at the moment.

Can we just make note that the PowerDuo looks like the result of  a PPP and a Vic 111mm meeting a dark room somewhere? I do kinda want one tho.

I was thinking the same thing. It's like a 111mm with the knife coming out the wrong way.

Jumping on the band wagon here, my immediate thoughts where "oh its a OHT with pliers".  It even has tooth pick and tweezers.  I'd like to see a size comparison against a standard SOG, I see they've squeezed in the compound leverage but it still seems usefully compact in the image where it's being held

Having said that its still probably the most exciting tool I've seen for a long time, I really want one.

I didn't notice gear covers on it - I hope they get integrated and those pics are just to show the compound leverage is included.

The Power Duo otherwise looks very interesting, as do the black slippy and the lights. The black slippy is a little large to be UK public carry, but I really like the idea of a larger non-locking folder for heavier cutting tasks - a very welcome addition in my mind. If I'm going to carry something that will cause some people to have incontinence issues - might as well make it a black one  >:D

Well done SOG  :tu:

FWIW the knife seems to be a lockback (there is a cutout and what seems like a lockback lever on the side of the balde). I guess the arc-lock-like button is probably just the tool lock lever and judging by its position it should either be a lockback or some weird contraption engaging like a linerlock... :-\ BTW, funny how the gear is exposed on the non-knife part of the tool... ::)

The PowerDuo looks interesting.  Im not a fan of china brand stainless steel though.  Its ok, but not awesome.  If I can get past my steel snobery I might try one.

Sorry, just not getting the Slipzilla.  It's too big to be UK legal, and it's going to street for more than the Byrd Tern (which is UK legal).

SOG playing catchup to Spyderco isn't really a good thing for SOG.

Personal preference  :tu:

Away from public areas where I use bigger knives (and can legally), I still hate locking blades. I like slippies and if a slippie won't do the job I need a fixed blade. Locks are evil. There's plenty of scope for me and big non-locking blades   ;)

I will freely admit I'm in the minority with my opinions though  :D

You guys are both spot on. :salute: First hand, that knife part is so much like a Victorinox OHT it's not funny. ::)

Tomorrow I'm going to borrow a one-hand trekker from the Vic booth and take it over to the SOG booth for a little side-by-side comparison, muwahaha >:D >:D

With one very important difference, it's right handed

Was the topic of gear covers raised on this Bob?

Nope- we didn't discuss gear covers on this model.  One side is pretty well already covered by the plastic scales and the other side doesn't seem that prominent.

This is also a pretty compact tool and I think the addition of gear covers would have seemed extra bulky.
