Who EDC a SURGE?
on: January 19, 2008, 02:12:11 AM
I have EDC a SURGE for the longest time and I have been a hardcore fan for a long time! I now got my new SURGE from Calvin and it went out my belt between minutes! So, who here EDC a SURGE?

I have noticed a few new differences on the SURGE Calvin sent me... The blade exchanger is just stainless not brushed stainless or whatever it was before and lastly the serrated blade is like the Charge models: not as agressive. Funny, we just had a long post about this! I am very impressed!

I  have been EDCing one now since they came out. I usually substitute only with the core while at work and rotate the others when off. I have no clues however to the diferences in the newer one as compared to the older original model due to the fact that after 2 years this one is still going strong. I remember anxiously awaiting the preorder, and counting down the days to release.

On your obvious recommendation, I will have another look at the surge, but I still think you're a loony.

It's large enough to cause spinal injuries, It's got that tiny bit driver which looks about as handy as a foot. I've never been a Scissor fan (though perhaps I should be?), so that's just a wasted File space to me, and frankly, it's arse-ugly.

The only good thing about it is that it (along with the Core) has a nice Reamer.

I'm tempted to buy one just so I can make a video of myself smashing it with a hammer, then send you the shattered remains - piece by piece.

(okay, it's not all that bad, but movies are boring without some decent antagonism)

(Plaulso - If you keep saying SURGE when discussing it, people are going to wonder if you have a speech impediment of some kind)

Have to admit, I carry my Surge, but not everyday. Sometimes, I carry a SAK Champion+. Sometimes, I only carry a very small and simple no brand key ring knife / file. Sometimes, I only have a small eyeglass screwdriver on my key ring.

(Perhaps my insults hide a forbidden love for the Surge)

Time to go look through the archives for Direct comparos between the Surge and anything else.

I'm tempted to get a surge, probably the BO one, but I'm not a big fan of plastic in multitools, and even though it['s the tiniest amount, that plastic bit on the end of the scissor handle is a real letdown for me. I'll just continue to EDC it's smaller and more popular brother, the wave. And maybe it's rich cousin, the charge. Even though I'd like to see an awl in exchange for the eyeglass screwdriver, whenever I show this tool to the non-initiated, they're like "Ooh, an eyeglass screwdriver! Give it here, I need that." I think  that Leatherman's R&D might've done their homework there.

A search revealed the Surge gets a lot of press here in various threads, but I still don't get it.

I'll probably have to get one to appreciate it.

I agree that the Core and Surge reamers are among the best out there.

But you and I have a totally different opinion about scissors Nomad. For me they are a near-necessity on a multitool, and the Surge scissors have a lot of advantages. Not only are they big and stout, they also don't need to be un-un-un-folded like some other scissor styles.

The main selling points for me would be: one handed opening blades, big and robust scissors, diamond file and saw are replacable ( I use file a lot!), fantasic awl, you can hone straight edge with file, stranded wirecutter, robust pliers, great hard and soft wirecutters, large flat driver for prying, and the large bit driver-which I am quite fond of! I really only mentioned a few of the selling points! God knows I could go on and on!!

I have considered that big, useful, easy to access scissors could change my beliefs regarding Multitool scissors.

One of my early, early EDCs was a pair of folding scissors on my keyring. They were fantastic.

I have perhaps been turned off scissors in general as I tend to cut items not within the recommended limits, leaving me with damaged, nonfunctional scissors.

Leatherman's marketing department themselves don't list that many selling points.

I've been EDCing the SURGE!!! for a few months now.  It's a really handy tool and I don't ever fear breaking it :)

If you took all the intestines out of your body and stretched them end to end... you would die.

I have been tempted, but I no longer need it as LM123 describes it so often that I already feel like I have got one.  :D

Only kidding, I will probably end up getting a Surge at some point but I am not a bit driver fan so would soon chose the Core.

I like the concept of the Surge and bought one after falling in love with the Core. I figured it would be like the Blast/Wave relationship I have since the respective models are similar.

After a few days of carry I found the Surge to be something I just wasn't in to. I use the woodsaw and metal-file on my tools a lot and switching them out, at times in the wet and the dark, turned into a pain. My Surge also had a certain fiddle factor required to get it closed, something about the plier-guards and the handles overall.

The huge blades and scissors were wonderful to use though, I need to figure a way to shoehorn them into a smaller tool.

I wonder how much LM paid for someone to come up with the name?

Kick is understandable enough, it's light, it's fun, it's casual.

Core - yep, a workhorse, dependable.

Wave - I don't know, might have something to do with how all those Sharps fold out?

Crunch - well that's obvious enough.

Fuse/Blast - I've got no idea.

Charge - Well it sounds powerful, but I expected it to have more electricians tools on it.

I suppose "Surge" could have been the coolest sounding evolution from "Wave"

It's not a Wave, it's a SURGE!
