I am very strange in many ways....
on: January 30, 2012, 12:00:32 AM
One of the ways I am strange is my like of Gerber BG items. I have no clue why. I can't stand Bear's TV show. I just disagree with a lot of it. However, I do like the colour scheme and the grippy designs. With that said, I was in Canadian Tire once again, and spied the BG Parang Machete. Not sure why, but I ended up coming home with it. What can I say, sometimes I am a mystery to myself.

As it stands right now,  I think I am missing only a few BG items.

Anyways, onto the machete.

The sheath is a ballistic nylon affair with two metal snaps and some velcro that holds the sheath closed. Once opened, 2/3rds of it opens up much like a hotdog bun. The back of the sheath combines the belt look as well as the usual SOS air instructions sewn onto the sheath via a 3 sides. This leaves the one side free to make a pocket so that you can store that little Bear Grylls instruction guide.

There was a short instruction sheath that informs the user to use the lanyard around the handle to make a sort of hand guard. This is supposed to prevent your hands from slipping onto the blade. I tried it out and it works great. Once again, that colour scheme and handle design I seem to like way too much.

Now all I need is the larger survival guide, and a few little odds and ends and I can call this mini obsession over.

Maybe you need one of these too....

While not BG, it does share the same colour scheme and is a survival kit

But does it have an instruction sheet on the proper methods of drinking one's own pee?   :pok:

I am not a BG fan either- I've never seen his show, but what I've heard about it doesn't do much to inspire me to watch it.  I do however like the color scheme and the grippiness of the BG models.  Both actually make these items (in my mind) are better suited to outdoor use as they make the items easier to hold in adverse conditions and easier to locate if dropped or just put down.

Having looked at the BG version of the Strata closely at SHOT, I have to say there is likely to be one of those in my near future.  I like the Strata but I didn't like how slippery or stubborn the lock release was.  The BG model goes a long way to making that somewhat better.

Must agree with you, I am not a huge fan of Mr Grylls but I do really like the color schemes of his product line. Don't have any of it though, great collection my friend, take care!!

I quite like Bear, he seems like quite an amiable lunatic actually.

He gets some stick for showing stuff you shouldn't do ... but that's the point of what he does. It's shock TV. Those people who know a bit about the topic can discern the "do" from the "do not", and those that don't will hopefully avoid getting themselves in a sorry state in the first place for fear of having to do the stupid stuff he does.

I was bought a set of his DVD's for Christmas, and there's blatently obvious stuff where he says don't do this or you'll die (either before or during him actually doing it), and him veering off into the (staged) unknown whilst recalling a tale of how someone somewhere survived because they did the right thing and stayed put. Even the opening credits say something like "I will be carrying a few basic survival tools and accompanied by my camera crew, and on our journey I will be looking for opportunities to demonstrate how barking mad I am, and if that means biting the head off a slimy toad to suck out the giblets whilst my mate behind the camera in munching a MacDonalds he picked up two minutes walk away down the road, so be it - cos I'm stark raving bonkers I am"

It's great fun  :tu:

My point exactly! Only a total balm pot would gravity feed several litres of bird poo infested water up his tradesmans to stay hydrated, when not 15 feet behind him there is a luxury yacht where all the camera crew are enjoying a nice cuppa and watching the sunset.

... or should that be full moon  :P

I doff my hat to you Mr Grylls  :hatsoff:

That's more than I knew about this BG a few seconds ago. The designs are slick but never seen his show, never seen a commercial for it. All I know is I keep seeing the stuff on the racks where I wished there were other stuff. I guess I just can't stomach endorsing signatures on a blade. Anyone remember the Steven Segal Kershaw? At least I knew who he was. The list goes on... Just hate celebrity endorsed stuff. That said, i guess he must be pretty tough if he likes to boil his own pee and drink it. Not sure I want to touch his tool after that though;) (sorry, couldn't help it)

Having some experience in this area I am not a BG fan but one night a while back I was pretty drunk and decided I wanted to relive some of the glory days after watching one of his episodes. First, a snake to bite the head off of and skin, just run out into the yard, I live in the country. Well, now I need a new garden hose, or at least a really good hoseclamp.
You can drink your own urine but I'm not about to. I decided to have my girlfriend test this theory. I guess it's possible but you should tell your girlfriend first before just jump out of a dark corner and start peeing in her face. That was my only option cuz I knew she wouldn't voluntarily drink it but she doesn't appear to be any worse for the wear.
Ah yes, the enema. This too has a survival application....just not for me. You can however take a PUR pump water filter and pump about 4 gallons of any liquid you like into a cows backside with it before you should leave the area quickly and at right angles.
I dont drink that much but when I do, I don't watch Bear Grylls. Stay at home my friends... :D

It's very unhealthy to drink your own urine.  If possible try to find a supermodel in a leather outfit to supply a drink or squeeze some juice from elephant poo as it's much more sanitary!

It's very unhealthy to drink your own urine.

My mother-in-law is in a psychiatric hospital, and claimed this morning to have done just that.  No joke.

Not sure what that says about Bear Grylls, but it must say something.  :)

Thank you sir, glad you enjoyed it. I'm working on taking things more seriously but so far I've been unsuccessful. Maybe Grant will go with me to one of those self help hippy groups so I can locate my inner chakra.

I found a few more BG items I didn't have.

Yes, that is the Scout knife, and a First Starter.

The Fire Starter is big and bulky. Kudos for at least utilizing that fat space with some useful information.

The Scout knife is rather nice. I will just leave it at that.
