What would you want to see come back?
on: February 12, 2012, 08:16:07 PM
Occaionally we see posts saying I wish that Manufacturer X would bring back Product Y with the following improvements ...

... but which tools do you think are worthy of coming back exactly as they were? No modifications, no upgrades, just starting again exactly where they left off.

Here's mine:

Gerber MP700
Small frame, suitable for pocket carry
Sprung pliers
Indexable Wire Cutters
Outside opening tools
Full 3D Phillips
Scissors, OHO inoffensive blade, nice ergos

Discontinued

Leatherman Juice KF4
I'm not a fan of the Juice line normally, but AFAIK the KF4 is the only one that doesn't have uneven handles, neither does it have the dreadful floppy scissors - but it does have the excellent diamond file. It still has THAT awl, and THOSE drivers ... but I'll put up with (modify) those. Most importantly though, nothing else has emerged on the market to fill the void the KF4 left behind

Discontinued

Victorinox Yeoman
An EXCELLENT SAK. A nice compact size brimming over with functionality including plus scales, the brilliant combo tool and of course the inline Phillips

Discontinued

Victorinox 84mm Golfer
Another superb SAK. Very compact and lightweight, yet very capable - as near to an 84mm Yeoman as the production timeline allows

Discontinued

Victorinox 84mm Scissors ... all models
Nuff said

Discontinued

Leatherman Squirt P4
A mini keychain tool like that with an awl and eyeglasses driver was inspired. Why they replaced those with the scissors and not that dinky file on the PS4 is beyond me  The fact I've not had one where then knife doesn't crash into the scales is a side issue - an annoying one, but a side issue none the less ::)

Discontinued

Bear & Sons, Bear Jaws & Super Bear Jaws {non-locking}
Great no frills tools, outboard construction, comfortable pliers
The Bear Jaws was also pocketable (not so with big brother)
Non locking hasn't stopped the popularity of the SAK or the Juice line, and hasn't stopped me outting either of these to good use (I haven't bought any locking versions)

Discontinued

I was lucky enough to get hold of all of these after the rug was pulled on them, but I know if I lose or damage them I might not be so lucky next time round.

So which tools do you think were just fine exactly as they were and still have a place in today's world?

I would like to see the whole genre of fixed head plier tools come back- the Al Mar 4x4 and Quick Clip, the SOG ToolClip and the Wenger SwissGrip.  Of course, I'd be happy to see any of those come back.

In tools, the leatherman sideclip.  In vehicles, the el camino, which I heard they were going to bring back next year.

In tools, maybe the Mini in a normal price range, not the disco-->prices we see now. I'd get a few.

As for the KF4, I have one and never carry it. I miss the scissors and bottle opener on it (instaid of the serrated blade). If LM makes a Juice SF4 (great name, right :D ) it would be just about perfect.

I completely agree on the Vic 84mm scissors and especially the 84mm golfer. I hate to see so many ALOX models going the same route. First Bantam and now the Solo and the Pruner too. :ahhh

Makes you wonder, how many ALOX models are sold to the general public (meaning not us)? I mean, in the last 18 years ( :ahhh has it been that long) since I began using and noticing SAKs, I saw ONE, yes ONE person using an ALOX SAK. I've seen hundreds of "normal" scaled SAKs around here, but ALOX, not so much.

In cars - Possibly the 2cv - reportedly designed to carry trays of eggs over a ploughed field - Flat battery?? no worries, simply crank the engine with the supplied cranking brace stored under the drivers seat - Brilliant - and soft top to boot..........How Cool??

Knives/MT's - Possibly the return to full manufacture of the recently released wenger 1893 collectors sak, along with the swissgrip I actually would edc them both - Pure Classics.

And ofcourse BBC Terry Wogan's  radio 2 morning show.

Another vote for the Sideclip here.  I carry mine a lot and it is just a solid awesome tool the way it is.  Folks tend to whine about the flat drivers and wish for an awl, but a non locking awl is just asking for a trip to the ER IMHO.

When they retire it, I will vote for the Blast as well, it should never be retired!

The original Leatherman PST with the original quality leather case with real brass rivets.  I'd buy a couple even though I have two now.

I would like to see EDCF come back the way it was two years ago running an SMF based forum that was easier to navigate.  I can't stand it's new (now two years old) format.  Everytime I try to get back into that site the nature of it's vBulletin format drives me away.

You're not the only one. :( And a more relaxed atmosphere would be nice. There will be another software change soon, in the next two weeks maybe (says JSB). Maybe this xenforo based format http://tiforums.com/ he's been testing for about a year now. But he said he's sorry he ever left SMF. I hope MT.O never leaves SMF. We can have 4,294,967,296 PMs here :ahhh and are way more stable.

I totally agree.  Though I'm way too entrenched and used to this place to let a format change sway me, I would really hate vBulletin here.  I was only at about 350 posts at EDCF when the change happened, though I'd been a member for 6 months, but I hated the new format so much I really stopped checking in over there for nearly a year.  I bet I only have 50 or less posts there since the change.  I will keep checking EDCF and hope for a better format, Jon has his head on straight if he is sorry about leaving SMF so maybe it will be better.

Post modified.  Thanks enki_ck!!

For those who didn't read it, I made a statement intended for charter members and thought I was posting in a thread that only they could see, since the charter forum is hidden.  It was not intended for public viewing but it was harmless I assure you.  If anyone would like to know, pm me and we can discuss in private.
