Good morning all, from snowy Oklahoma.
on: February 13, 2012, 05:10:21 PM
Found this site this morning while having coffee and surfing. Couldn't believe that there were others out there who share my affliction, lurked for about 3 minutes before registering knowing full well that this will take me down a road which will ultimately lighten my wallet and add weight to my many gear bags. The plus side is that I will meet many good people on whom I can blame my reckless spending. Looking forward to meeting everyone and hope to have an opportunity to earn a place here, my best regards to all.

Welcome to the forum- where have you been all this time?  We've kept the fire going till you got here.  :D

We have more than a few Okies here so you should be in familiar company.

Now, a bunch of guys are going to ask you questions like "What kinds of tools do you have" and "What's your favorite" but you can answer them after we get through the important stuff like What kind of :doggy: is Ajo?  I only ask because my Shepherd/rotti cross is in my lap and my Siberian Husky is lying on the floor next to the couch as I type this, and they are going to want to know!  :D

Sorry, had to step away for a few minutes. Thanks to everyone for the welcome mat. Pleease tell your friends that "Ajo" is a 5 year old Czech Shepard who does patrol duties, ie, narcotics, tracking and handler protection. He's a great partner and is with me 24 hours a day, he also enjoys meeting other animals, unlike most police K9's. He's a little freaked out by miniature horses but that's another story for another time. :)
As far as my tools go, I have many that I carry in my unit and have used over the last 19 plus years but to be honest, after reading some of this website I have much to learn. So with that in mind, please consider me the new rookie who came here to learn and is willing to do the grunt work until told otherwise. I'll just be over here emptying the trash or something with my mouth shut and my ears open.

AHB, I'll surrender my man card for a bit and admit that I kinda like the smilies myself. As to your earlier question regarding my tools, I carry most of the usual stuff that "The Fuzz" carries around, multi's, folders and one CRKT fixed on my belt for weapons retention purposes. I also keep several small multi's in various EDC bags for all the usual reasons. The fixed blade is also very handy for cutting my K9 partner out of briars and vines on manhunts, this happens quite often. We are the only K9 team in the eastern part of our county so every time some idiot bales out of a stolen car or runs out the back of a recently burgled home, we get sent to track, then bite!
Presently my SOG multi sees the most use but is too large to carry on my already heavily laden "Batman" belt. I'd greatly appreciate any input on a small, sturdy multi that will fit in my front pocket.
With that, I'm off to the donut shop!!!

Welcome Stew and Ajo!   You realize now that you've asked the question, you might as well just start handing your money over.

Maybe you should start with a swisstool spirit x from walmart since it is currently on sale.

Good to see another dog man here.  I worked canine (private security) for quite a few years.  My old dog Pete (no longer with us) and I worked a lot of nasty places and we both have the scars to prove it.  Pete was a dogo argentino, which I swear is the absolute best dog on the planet for pretty well anything.  He was a tank.

Oh, and I know what you mean about the Batman belt- when I started working security I had a 28 inch waist and used to try and carry anything I'd ever need for any situation.  Nowadays my equipment list has been pared down significantly, although the available real estate has grown by more inches than I care to tell!   :ahhh

Funny that you mention that breed. Another handler that I train with is from Austria and said almost the exact same thing about that breed. I'm not familiar with them but clearly they're reputation proceeds them. I'm gonna Google that them and see what I can learn about "Pete". Ajo and I would have loved to learn a thing or two from him, we'll drink a toast to him tonight since it's our last night off. :salute:

When you quote a post, look for the end tag- it looks like this:

If you post after that point then your response looks like this:

Now that's out of the way, that other handler knows where he's coming from.  Dogos are about 80-100 pounds (usually- many folks breed them bigger) and are bred to hunt mountain lions and wild boar in their native Argentina.  The traditional method of hunting is that the dogos hold the prey until the hunters come up and slit the prey's throat with a knife.

So, what you end up with is a 100 pound dog that has to be fast, agile, tough and intelligent enough to take on an animal at least twice it's size and hold it long enough for a fat guy to catch up and get close enough to cut it.  You'd be hard pressed to find a dog as perfect as a dogo- the pain tolerance in these dogs is amazing.  A crackhead once caught Pete in the face with a knife, laying the whole top of his head wide open and Pete barely noticed, although he did wear the nasty scar for the rest of his life.

Be careful when you Google it- there are lots of pics of these dogs hunting, so there's lots of gruesome pictures and videos.  But, since they don't perform the kill they really don't have any inherent aggression.  Pete was very protective of me (I got him from a shelter after he'd been abused and abandoned, then almost froze to death) but no one ever felt threatened by him.  If he felt you were too close to me he'd stand between us and lean on your legs, and the dog was so solid you couldn't help but step back.  At no time would he growl or show his teeth, and you'd never feel like he was going to attack- but you'd still step away because he was a force of nature!

Look for a book called Oogy- The Dog Only A Family Could Love.  It's a great book about a dogo that had been in a situation similar (albeit worse) than Pete was, and yet turned out to be as lovable, friendly and happy go lucky as you could ever expect a dog to be.  Pete was the same way- despite his rough start he never held a grudge.

I used to work with a guy with a Belgian Malinois named Duke.  Duke was just as likely to bite his handler as the bad guys, but he and Pete used to have a great time together.  Despite being half again as large as Pete, Duke could never get the upper hand on him, although when we'd call them back Pete always looked the worse for wear since white dogs show grass stains and dirt a lot better than copper and black do.  You knew Duke was just as dirty, it just didn't show on him!

The last time I saw Duke was at a party just before I left Toronto- he ripped a drunk guy's lower lip off when the guy tried to kiss him.  The guys told me they had a hell of a time at the hospital because the doctors wouldn't work on the drunk while he was so messed up, so they were trying to sober him up with coffee.  Imagine how hard it is to drink coffee with no lower lip!  :D

Ok let me try this again, Hello Kipper and nice ears. Ajo has big ears too but I reference them like the rear sight of a handgun when we're tracking. I look straight over his head the direction he's looking cuz that's where our bad guy is.
