Ugh!!!! part 2
on: January 31, 2008, 07:23:50 PM
OK, 1st of all I'm NOT a hypochondriac, I've had plenty of surgeries to fix me so don't think I'm faking all of this.

The last couple of days my stomach has been kind of hurting but I just ignored it. So today I was in the bathroom and took a look and I have a very noticeable bulge by my belly button. Since I had the CT scan last Friday I'm about 99% certain it isn't cancer. I'm fairly sure it's a hernia as most cancer is hard to the touch and this is soft and squishy, just like internal organs tend to be.

So, as long as it isn't cancer I'm OK with it but I am getting tired of medical problems. In the past 7 years I've had 2 shoulder surgeries, a hernia surgery, a surgery to remove some hidradenitis under my arm(link below), oral surgery to remove about 3 infected teeth, a surgery to fix my acid reflux that involved splitting my side open, taking out one of my ribs and wrapping my esophagus around my stomach and of course my recent kidney surgery.

In my 20's I lived by the motto "Live hard, die young and leave a good looking corpse". Pretty hard living. However, I DIDN'T die so now I'm stuck in this broke down body that's falling apart. Of course now having a wife and family I'd like to stay around a bit longer but it's a little frustrating not being able to do things I want to.

Oh well, hopefully I'll get this taken care of and will be good to go by summer. Ugh!!!!

Here's the link to the hidradenitis. It was quite painful, a lot of the times it takes several surgeries to totally get rid of it but I was lucky, 1 surgery(and several weeks of strong antibiotics) cleared it up.

I took a couple of pics but photobucket is down so I can't upload them right now. It's pretty noticeable in the pics.

Here we go, both pics are straight down from the middle of my chest. I'll try to get some better ones but these show the bulge pretty good.

I called the DR, I described the symptoms and they say it definitely sounds like a hernia. I have an appt next Wednesday. It hurts but it's nothing too terrible so I should be OK till then.

Oh by the way what helped for me when I had to wait to get in(after postponing it forever.) Was to wear just sweat pants, and pick up one of the Material handler girdles. ya know the ones with the shoulder straps and go up to the sternum. It really helped not having the pressure of the belt and pants and the support gave a great relief when I had to do anything.

But I feel for ya bro.

I think they are called back braces- if you call them girdles, no man will wear them! :P

DTH... after everything else you've been through, I'm sure a hernia will seem pretty simple to you!  A cake walk even!

Even so, you always have my best wishes- take it easy.  I know you are smart enough to know not to screw around with medical problems (if you were, you wouldn't be here now!) so I'll just say that SOSAK and Multitool.org membership requires a long term commitment and I'll be darned if I let you out early! :D

I wonder if the lockblade one would be as stiff. It wouldn't have to be.

I doubt I'll be disciplined enough to save up the money for one.  :-\

Well I actually got in to see the Dr today and it's definitely a hernia. So I have an endoscopy next Friday for them to take a look down in my stomach to see if I have an ulcer, they'll call me when they an app't set up for the surgery.

At least you know what the score is at least, and a hernia's a lot better than the alternative I supose.

Well due to all of our wacky weather this year I finally got in to see the surgeon today. I'm gonna have surgery on the 17th. I was hoping it was gonna be an outpatient thing but I'll probably be in the hospital 2-4 days. I guess the hernia is bigger than I thought it was. So wish me luck!!!

Good luck with the surgery. Don't lift any heavy multitools in the meantime.

Mate my Dad had a rather large hernia corrected about two years ago he was 58 at the time and in poor shape with a rather large spare tyre  and he was back to normal within a month that includes a nasty hospital acquired infection
Hope this helps rather than hurts
Good Luck

Not really, medically I've been having a tough row to hoe the last few years. It seems I hit my mid 30's and EVERYTHING just quit working on me. Of course the way I lived my life during my 20's I can't say I'm surprised. It gets frustrating, there's some days I just want to curl up and cry. But feeling sorry for myself doesn't do any good, besides, my wife works so I stay home with a very rambunctious 3 year old. I simply don't have time to get too down.
