The Tourist
on: March 24, 2012, 06:04:14 AM
We borrowed the movie 'The Tourist'  (with Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie) from our local library system.

They are in Venice.
The villain is British.
and has Russian thugs.

So... what knife do they pull out the threaten the heroine?

Yes...
A Buck Knife.

Made perfect sense.  :-\

I mean... I like bucks and all, but... really?

Of all the knives in the world available to bad guys... especially considering it was handed to him by one of his lunkhead russian goons... and it was a Buck that was handed over?

Sure, they're available internationally. I just can't fathom a Russian lunkhead carrying a Buck knife.

Then again... maybe it was a status symbol among his peers. :)

Was it the 119?

That is the one used by more Hollywood slashers than any other.

Or the 110, the most copied knife design in the world, ever.

Really?  I guess I'm not watching enough slasher movies, never noticed it..... The 119 has been my woods knife of choice for years now, great knife.  And now that I know that it can effectively deal with meddling teenagers, I'm ready for anything! :tu:

I'm not a fan of Slasher movies but my wife went through a horror phase and I spent a fair bit of time in the horror aisle at Blockbuster. For the younger crowd, that's a place where old people used to rent DVDs and VHS movies.

There were 119's on more covers than anything else. In fact, almost every cover that had a knife on it was a 119.

I understand why peole get upset when you have a soviet soldier brandishing a m16 etc but mercenaries can have whatever mojo they like... Why wouldn't a russian have a nice big emotional USA blade.... such is the case with AK variants amongst americas finest ... errr what do you call people that sink thousands of dollars on guns but still live in a trailer?

The knife was a 119, or similar. I had a Buck when I was younger, pretty much identical to the 119 in shape but like the 'kid brother' size. I only ever used it once, to butcher a deer that my brother had shot and hung to bleed out. For that, the knife was amazing, and made quick work of it. I ended up trading that knife to that brother, for a few folding bucks and a mini-mag lite.

The 'shows up everywhere in Hollywood' is the exact problem here. Supposedly in Venice, world-trotting super-rich British villian, Russian hitmen... using the single most overused hollywood knife out there. It's almost like the knife is some kind of Hollywood shorthand for stabbity-stab-kill-knife. It's not like Buck put out a special 'Michael Meyers' edition of this thing... is it? :D
