Many of us probably recognized 70%+ of the tools and gear the tributes carried. I'm embarrased to admit I recognized even most of the cheap, bad quality, made to look cool and not work swords and throwing knives

And we probably also twitched when she didn't cannibalize those glider-chutes, but that was staying with the book. Still..

So, what I didn't recognize what the knife that Katniss was carrying- it looks like a Ka-bar Warthog with an apparently decent saw. Anyone have a make on that?

I saw the S-Biner, and I too wondered why she didn't use more of the gear she had around her.

I think the movie did a poor job of illustrating the story, even without reading the book I can tell it was better than the movie.

Actually, for once, the book was pretty well identical to the movie.  I read the book right after seeing it since I felt there was a lot that was cut out as well, but there really wasn't- in fact, there was some added to the movie!

The book is written in first person as if we are experiencing it through Katniss' eyes, so the parts in the movie where we meet the Gamekeeper and President Snow are fabricated for the movie.  The second book, which I am in the middle of now, goes into a lot more detail, and kind of seems to me like the author wrote the Hunger Games as a standalone book but made oodles of money off and decided to turn it into a trilogy, since there are suddenly a lot of details that were sort of hinted at in the first book that are being built into something major in the rest of them.

They are interesting books, and very light reading.  You could polish the first one off in a day if you liked.  It takes only slightly longer to read than it did to watch the movie!

That's what my wife said, she read the first two in two days.  I read a lot, but usually a book takes me at least two weeks to complete, kindle books take longer because of the location I reserve them for.

My wife may still have her borrowed copy of the Hunger games so I guess I'll pick it up when I can.  It was a great story, I think reading it would be better for me, as it usually is.

It's definitely worth reading, I was just pointing out that for once, there's very little difference between the book and the movie.

Why don't you read it on your iPhone?  I have been reading ebooks on phones and PDA's for years.  I prefer to read that way since I am not bringing extra things around with me.... well ok, I used to have to carry a separate phone and PDA, but that was still better than bringing along paperbacks everywhere I went.

I actually prefer to read on my iphone nowadays, I just don't have as much time for paper books.  I still buy them but I have about 30 unread novels sitting on my shelf at the moment.  My kindle app has seen at least that many since I got the iphone last year!  Not all completed yet but most of them.

Amici,
I don't remember the S-biners, but it was a terrific movie! I was expecting some more of the same lib clap trap that's been spewing outta Hollywood, and I was pleasantly surprised.

Cheers,

Haven't read the books, or seen the movie.  My wife and son are both crazy about it right now though.

That said, it looks to me like she's also shooting from the wrong side of the bow; the arrow should be on the side of the viewer in the pic.  On the other hand, there's no easily identifiable rest for the shaft either, so that could be one reason for the funky grip.

Actually that's about one thing that is OK.  European style shooting with a plain bow seems to have always been done over the knuckles, though I believe that some other cultures shoot over the thumb.

Not perfect perhaps, but better than the girl above. :D

Still haven't seen the film or read the book, but I do keep hearing good things about them.

Well I got around to seeing the film earlier tonight and I actually rather liked it. :)  Spotted the 'S'-biner's thanks to this thread, the only other bit of kit I recognised was the Cold Steel bowie Bushman they were using as spear heads.

Film was good enough that I'll go and read the books I think.

Interesting; thanks for the info Gareth.   :tu:  I guess I'm just too sheltered; the few times I've ever shot a recurve were models that had an arrow-rest built into the handgrip of the bow.  All the other shooting I've done with a bow was with a compound.
