Is "Junk drawers" an American tradition only?
on: March 31, 2012, 07:22:15 PM
Forgive me if this sounds like a silly question but are junk drawers only in the U.S.A?

If other countries have them what are they called?

I think junk drawers are pretty universal.  I've personally seen them in Japan, Czech Rep. and Hungary.

This is true for me too.  We honestly don't have a "junk drawer" in our house.  Our garage is for that.    :D

Nope I don't have one. Everything I have is organized and sorted. It's the only way I can keep sane in all this madness we call the world.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

I have an end-table like thing that has 7 drawers.  They are all my junk drawers.

3 Drawers in our kitchen probably fit junk-drawer description. Along with 1 cupboard,
and a good portion of our 2nd bedroom (closet and floor).

In our defense, we don't have a garage, and our 'basement' is actually a cellar, mostly
the domain of house-spiders and ... THESE...

As horrifying as they appear, they're just a kind of cricket: harmless really, but ugly.

Soo... we leave all our 'junk' in our already small and crowded house.

If I saw one of those in my house, I would engage with 9mm rounds and then burn it down.  Say what you will about living in Canada; yeah it's cold and there's lots of snow but at least I don't have to put up with that nonsense.

I suddenly have new insight into how people afraid of spiders feel when I just carry away a spider that have frightened them instead of killing it...

I agree with Suveges here... In the immortal words of Ellen Ripley, “Nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure.”

If I had those running around my house I'd have 12 gauge marks on everything.  Just looking at the picture I'm having Starship Trooper flashbacks, and I'm not talking about the shower scene!

TBH real junk drawers are those controlled by women. It's such a mess, that sometimes they don't even open.

I like to fill my man drawer with old chargers and various other bits of mystery electronic cables. It acts like a tree's root system and keeps everything together in the event of a mudslide.

I remember my grandfather's junk drawer was a goldmine when I was a kid. He was a glazier for 40 years and a Jehovah's Witness (like Amish people with power tools for those that don't know) and the stuff he had in there was mind boggling to a 10 year old. Crazy glazier tools and hardware that I'd never seen before, old pocket knives, drill bits, driver tips, you name it. Every time I'd dig something cool out and go running to him to ask him if I could keep it the response was the same,

"Did you find that in the junk drawer?"
"Yes."
"Whatever, I don't care."
