Help Me Choose Sog or Spyderco
on: April 16, 2012, 11:16:33 PM
I'm stuck. I can't decide if I want to go with the the assisted Sog Flash II, or the Spyderco Tenacious with the G-10 handle.

I already have two other folders so this would not be a first purchase.

I EDC a SOG PowerPlier weekdays. A LM Wave or Spirit on the weekend.

I already have a Kershaw Select fire and I will be getting a Blur soon.

I will probably get both eventually, but, I kinda want a assisted blade for now just for the wow factor.

What do ya think?

I wasn't thrilled with a couple of things with the Flash 2 - the pocket clip felt flimsy, held on with a single screw.  The opening action was pretty rough compared to other AOs I own, especially Kershaws.  And the blade was just too thin and cheap-feeling for my liking.  I haven't handled a Tenacious yet, but my Spyderco Sage 1 is a regular carry knife for me.  I own a couple other Spydies and just love the feel and ergos of them.

This is good info to have. The reviews I read are not always reliable from retail sites. I know the people here know their stuff and I trust their judgement. +1 for the Spyderco.

The flash 2 isn't as solid as Sage, but it's 1/3 the price. I had one and quite liked it, it's fun to play with. The best way to open it is to pinch hold the handle, then push the thumbstud on outside with middle finger. The handle is plastic so depends on person it can feel a bit cheap, however it's also very light for a 3.5" blade and rides deep in pocket.

Tenacious follows the classic spyderco profile, so it can get boring (though not a problem if it's your first spyderco). It's solid and nothing fancy, but will take anything you throw at it. Both the blade and closed profile are very wide, so it doesn't do well on some cuts and takes up above average pocket space.

I eventually sold the flash because I didn't want an assisted opener.

Spyderco.  I highly dislike Sog's AO mechanism.

I wasn't trying to compare the Flash and the Sage, two completely different animals like you said.  The Sage just happened to be the first of my Spydercos to pop into my head.  The Flash also didn't work all that well for me as a lefty either, so maybe that biased me a bit against it.

This is great info. The another plus for the Spyderco. I am not concerned about size in the pocket as the Select Fire is quite large anyway and frequently back pocket carry the LM Wave and hardly notice. But, I still feel a need for an assisted open to compliment my Spirit on the weekends so I guess I am leaning toward a Spyderco Tenacious for the weekdays and a Kershaw Blur for the weekends.

If it's for EDC I'd go with the Tenacious.  It's simply a great knife for the money; I don't think there's a better value on the market right now in that price category for what you get.  Mine has been bullet proof so far.  I had it for about six months when I got an Endura 4, and then a Stretch 2, both of which are in my folder rotation now.  I still use my Tenacious as a beater knife though, as it takes a wicked edge and is easy to sharpen.  It's handled everything I've thrown at it without batting a lash.  It is a touch on the big side for EDC, but if you've got roomy pockets, it'll be fine.  Best knife on the market in the $35 price range IMO.

Another vote for Spyderco, based on F&F.  They really turn out a fantastic product.

Wow, that is an overwhelming positive response for the Spyderco. It's ironic because just last year I was sitting at the table and I got an email for a sale on Spyderco and thought, no, I will never buy one of 'those' knifes. That's for a different crowd. And here I am 4 months later I am going to Cabela's sporting goods store tomorrow to get my hands on one in person because the pressure is just too much to bear. I will probably buy one. I love this forum! Thanks for all the positive input. The knowledge level and helpfulness of this crowd is awesome.

Good choice!

I've known about Spyderco for many (many!) years, but avoided/shunned them because they were so different and expensive. I usually bought SAK's and kept them for many years, and lately multitools. Recently, my interest in quality knives has grown and as a result I have bought 2 SOG's in the past 2 years. I was lucky enough to be able to return the last one for a store credit. Both SOG's were poorly finished and assembled, and made with mediocre materials. In my opinion, they are all hype and marketing these days.

Last week I was gifted a Spyderco Manix 2. Wow! The fit and finish are very good, bordering on great. The blade pivot was adjusted perfectly for no drag or play. The blade grinds are smooth and uniform. The blade lock is impressive for its simplicity and ease of operation. The ergonomics work well for my larger hands. And it is an ambidextrous knife, which can't be a bad thing. I can't speak to any other model of Spyderco knife, but I can say that I won't be avoiding them any longer.

Regards,
Dave

I too have been unpressed with SOG's.  I bought a Salute before getting the Tenacious and was severely disappointed.  The design of the handle is poor, and the pivot is crappy... no way to get it to open smoothly w/o blade play.  No such problem on the Tenacious I have.  I also far prefer the opening hole compared to those nasty little studs that dig into your thumb and are irregularly placed, so that you end up having to open two very similar knives with completely different hand holds.

Nice score on the Manix!  I'm jonesing for one of the new Manix 2 XL models.

Thank you all for your input. If you were to check the other thread you would already know that I have a Spyderco Tenacious on its way to my house. I was going to get one for each of you but the check from Publishers Clearing House has not come in yet.

Usually the MTO motto is to get both.... so in the spirit of the forum I'll say get the SOGZilla:
