Making a wrist watch... Help!
on: April 29, 2012, 02:43:56 PM
OK guys, for a while I was looking at watches for wrist (LOL I don't want to kick in auto correct option with that wrisTW@Tch....). At the end I figured that I really want one of those Pilot Flieger watches like Maratac Auto Pilot Watch, but on the end some are unavailable, and others are way too expensive for me. So I figured Why not LEGO my own... But then there are some issues with that, i.e.:

- What tools do I need
- Where do I order parts
- What are good quality parts
- Is there any tutorials
- What...Where...When...How....

So i figured I ask you guys, have anyone played with watches, made some, modded, legoed some from parts, etc.

What I want is:

- 42mm - max 45mm case size made of brushed SS (preferably PVD)
- Black nonreflective dial Fleger A Uhr type (would like a date window) with luminous reflexive number and other markings and 12h mark triangle with two dots
- Three hands central (Hour-minute-seconds) luminous reflexive
- Dome Sapphire Crystal or cheaper but reliable plastic strenghthened crystal
- Onion shaped crown
- Black extra-long band - calfskin fixed by rivets
- Movement - I prefer AUTOMATIC but manual would be fine. It is important that it is reliable and durable

So anyone??

Zed might help you on this one but whenever I search for info on watches it leads me to Watchuseek.

I've never made a complete watch before, just repaired/modded them.

See this post for some links to places that sell movements and parts.

I dunno.  Depends on cost etc.  Mods for Seikos are common, you could base your watch on 7s26B movements.  I'm interested.  Done mods, never built one from scratch.

BTW, I have one of these pilots I was planning to sell if you want one...

The Aviator.  Killer lume.  Does not tick all your boxes, but not bad.  I will be getting some domed mineral glass lenses to try out on it in a couple weeks.

Nice size, around 40mm, big crown.

Sounds good.  I only have a flat crystal on it now.  Should be getting new domed ones either next week or end of the month.

I like it, greta lume, solild Miyota movement, but I have a few too many watches, and need to thin the collection a touch...
