Gerber Black -- Are these stainless ??
on: May 03, 2012, 01:03:09 AM
Hi,

Apologies to all for asking such a dumb question.  :twak:

BUT, are Gerber's Black Oxide MT's basically made from the same material, i.e stainless steel as opposed to their non coated versions.
I simply assumed that B/O was, just that - applied to the standard stainless steel versions.

I only ask as I've been chasing after the now discontinued Freehand - finally found it at above&beyond but it was listed much cheaper in the B/O finish as opposed to S/S which I find rather odd!

Tosh
I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

I've never heard that the steel is any different and I can't think of any reason it would be either.  Sounds like you've just found a good deal.

I'm pretty sure it is all the same metal Tosh, whether it be finished in black or left bare. Not sure why the black Freehand would be any cheaper than the standard one  Like Gareth says you've probably just found yourself a great deal :)

Yes, same exact metal. You can strip off the oxide finish... with some effort.

...or you wear it off with years off use - makes a nice Patina.
and yes, it´s the same finish.
When my MP 600 was stolen ("borrowed" on a construction site, i guess you know the game...) i replaced it with a BO one. it´s the same thing in black and teh finish is quite durable.
