Opinel Pictorial: No12 Slim Vs Traditional
on: May 14, 2012, 06:54:02 PM
Following this thread http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,37448.0.html I thought that it would be nice to see some comparison pictures, with some written information between a large Traditional Opinel and a large slim Opinel.

I chose the size 12, the largest "Normal" size available.

The Traditional 12 is the Carbone model, with Carbon Steel and the Slim 12 is SS.

Both have 12cm blades and similar length handles.

The Traditional is longer overall as it has a bigger locking mechanism.

The Slim has a maximum blade thickness of 1.38mm and the Traditional 2.24mm.

The Traditional is more robust and scary  :ahhh looking and the slim more elegant  :hatsoff:, with a filleting, flexible blade.
The Slim is a user the Traditional not; mainly because it is Carbon Steel and I feel that if I am going to use something that bulky for heavier work I might as well use a fixed blade like a Carbon Steel Mora knife.  :D
Note the difference in weight.  ;)

Very cool comparison mate  :salute: im still not sure about the slimline model as far as looks go, although i know ill get one in the end, and my largest opie is 3 #8's as i like this size for camping and in the garden type work and like #5-6 for pocket carry and #3-4 for altoid tin back ups, i must get a larger opie soon to see for myself but know it will end up a draw queen, the slimlines look like a great fillet and meat cutting knife, i find opies great value knives with character and they gain more of this with age, thanks mate for posting this up  :tu:

Zed, how did I know you will be the first to notice this thread??  :D

The only Opinel I am actually using is the Slim 12 (The rest are just toys) ; big blade but smaller feeling, lighter, more discreet in the pocket..

Thank you  :tu:

Nice!  I think a slim 12 in stainless would make a great camping/kitchen food prep tool.

Looks much more French, like the Laguiole knives... not a bad thing though.

Great pics :tu:

I like Opinels, but the best Opinel there is is not a knife. The folding saw is a BEAST and really great for outdoor work!

I think I'm going to buy one of these Optinels.  There's a certain coolness factor here.
