Finally did it
on: May 12, 2012, 12:06:20 AM
I was at the local Army Navy surplus store today looking for something else and ended up not getting what I wanted, but I did get a Cold Steel Canadian Belt Knife, their version of a Grohmann.  I'll give it a fair chance, but so far I am not impressed, but I could be biased as I LOVE Grohmann knives.

Ooo, that's a good price, the handle looks much more comfortable, but not really a fan of carbon steel.

I've only seen one Grohmann up close and I was VERY impressed. It would have to be pretty bloody good to stand up to that I reckon.

I did however, click on this thread expecting to see a picture of you with a finger missing for some reason >:D

I was glad to get it- it only cost me $20, which is not a bad price for a decent fixed blade.  I know some folks have real issues with Cold Steel, but I'd had more than my share of CS products and I find them to be decent quality at a good price, so I figure it is well worth that amount.

I have had a few Grohmanns over the years and other people always seem to like them as much as I do, and I either trade them away or give them as gifts- my father has one of mine and he loves it.  I keep meaning to get to the Grohmann factory for a tour, but I've never gotten around to it.  I still have one now that was a gift from a bunch of really great MTO members, and it's not going anywhere.

Since the CS version is about half the price of a real Grohmann I'll consider it a success if it's at least half as good.  I'll get some pics up shortly.

Not had the pleasure of a Grohmann yet, but I quite like the CS version as a cheapo knife. Then again, I like all three of my cheap little CS knives, the Finn Bear and Roach Belly being the other two

Nice to see the two side by side, I think it's the first direct comparison I've seen  :salute:

I'm pretty certain Ben did a direct comparison a while back...

I'll admit I was kind of pissed when I saw Cold Steel ripping off the Grohmann design, but the Canadian Belt Knife isn't really all that bad.  I'm still not a fan of the ripping off part, but the knife is actually quite decent, which really doesn't come as much of a surprise since Cold Steel does tend to make good products.

I just don't want to like it... :P

Yeah, I suppose that's a way of looking at it....

It's kind of a reminder about the stupidity of our government which decided to stop issuing Grohmann knives to our troops in favor of Chinese copies of Grohmanns....  ::)

That's ashame as they make a heck of a knife. I have a belt and a boat and they are 2 of my favorites. I plan to add a camp and a bird and trout at some point.
