I'm partial to a traditional Canadian Indian method . A squeeze bottle , half Gas half diesel , and a zippo . Works pretty much every time !A James Bay Cree fishing guide showed me the trick .

I've read some reviews where it had problems with jamming...with no provision to manually release the rod. Unlike the original Blast Match, the small rod of the Sparky is held in a sliding plastic carrier.

There are available in the stores around here, but I've decided to put off buying one until I read that issue has been resolved or a redesign has been done.

I got my foot long misch firesteel today, it's quite difficult to use. Even my mora scout with sharpened spine, which works wonderfully with regular firesteel, cannot throw a spark reliably. Most of the time it just shave a strip off instead, they ain't kidding when they say you need to use knife edge on it.

Yeah, I've found that the Asian Mischmetal rods require a change in technique and are less forgiving when you strike them.

I have to hold the blade basically perpendicular to the rod so that it does not dig in as much. Lighten up on the pressure and increase the speed of the strike...more like a quick flick of the striker.

A few new firetoys...

Finally got my RAT Firestarter after a long delay. They had problems with their original contractor and had to find another one to take their place.

...and a rope lighter.

Looks like something you'd use for lighting cannons.

I tried the misch steel a bit more, still haven't got the hang of it, but when it does spark it indeed light stuff up a lot quicker.

Hey Spork tell me how effective that RAT firestarter is when you get a chance to test it out. I'm curious on how effective it is compared to other offerings like the Ultimate Sirvival ones and the LMF offerings.
