Buck 303 "cadet"
on: May 31, 2012, 09:20:03 AM
I was digging through some knives and found an old Buck 303. I'm really excited about this as tomorrow I am going to give it a cleaning and try and get a good edge back on the blades. My plan it to use it as a whittling knife.  :tu: Does anyone have experience with this knife?

I have one and like it quite a bit.  Mine is a newer one with the sabre grind blades, which I like.
It's a very handy knife.

Amici,
I have one, and I actually used it as EDC not that too long ago. I wouldn't purchase one now since these are now made in China for Buck.

Cheers,
Serge

Not wanting to start a fight here, but I have a coup;e of China Bucks, and an American 305.The only rel differance I've noticed is the price!

On a lighter note,be careful Capt, we get in trouble for whittling with something other than a SAK! ;)
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

Actually, the 303 is still made in the US.  The Chinese model is the 373.  There are some slight differences, but they are both great knives.  I have a 373, and it's big brother, the 371, which is a Chinese-made 301.  I carried the 371 for a couple weeks recently, and now have a 301 in my pocket to compare them.  The main difference I've noticed?  One has wood scales and is marked "China", the other has black Derlin scales and is marked "USA" .  No difference quality-wise that I've seen......

The full series of 300 knives can be had in made in the USA variety. You have an option to buy some of the 300 series knives made in China at a much lower price. You have to read the fine print. I bought 4 new ones this year and all are made in the USA.

I did have one and liked it well enough, but I did pass it along as I have a Case stockman that I like that little bit more.  Buck was still a good little knife though. :tu:

I have one, but have yet to use it or carry it.  It seems like a nice little knife though.  Maybe I'll EDC it for the rest of the week.

Here's the one I had, now in the hands of Zed (unless he's sold it of course ;)).

Mine cleaned up well and took a good edge. I tried using it for whittling and its just a bit small for my hands. I still love the knife it just will not be a whittler for me.

That 420HC does take a great edge, doesn't it?  I used my 301 all week at work cutting cardboard and all it needed was a quick touch up.  If the 303 is a bit small for you (and honestly it is for me too), try a Case medium stockman, a pattern 18 or 032.  they're a bit larger and more hand-filling than the 303, while still being about 1/2" shorter than the 301.

I'm sure it could take a much better edge than I gave it as I am still having a little bit of trouble with my Lansky sharpener.
