I'm so proud...
on: June 08, 2012, 08:02:19 PM
My daughter asked for a pink Spyderco for her birthday.  Not a pink knife or pink tool, but a pink Spyderco.

Brings a slight tear to my eye... :)

So which one are you getting her? Delica, Manix 2, Native, Squeak or the Ladybug? Or even the Endura or Lum? So many to choose from. :ahhh

She's 21 at the end of June.  I went with a Native.  I liked the compromise of blade size and materials.  Delica was the second option. Squeak and Ladybug seemed prettty small and Manix 2 is pretty big for her.

You must be talking about the FRN native? Honestly I'm not a fan of it compare to delica, it just feels crude in design and execution. Which is not a surprise since it is from an older generation of spydercos.

the native is a cool knife, I had one and it opened very smoothly and easily. the blade looks very aggressive too, which will contrast nicely with the pink.
We need more like her, a woman at work today said that it was creepy that I had a pocket knife with me (and this was a tiny case swayback jack).

They also made a pink endura and delica. Hard to find sometimes but I have both.

The Native seems like a very nice knife!  It seems very smooth.  I hope she likes it.  :)

Curious though:  Jie, what didn't you like about it compared to a Delica?

The design is almost 15 years old without any significant change, so it lacks quite a few improvements Spyderco made since. The thumb hole is partially covered by the handle when closed, pivot is pinned (though some people don't mind), pattern on handle isn't as good traction wise, and the clip is held on with one bolt and molding on the handle. If you snag the clip and rotate it, it'll damage the molding on the handle, and won't stay in place as well anymore. Overall it isn't as polished as Delica.

It's still a solid knife though, I'm sure it'll serve her well for a long time.

I like the blade shape of the Native.  Yes it's an old design but I'm pretty certain that we are still cutting most of the same things we were cutting 15 years ago so I don't mind the "old" shape.

That having been said I have a blue g-10 Native and it is sweet.  I had an FRN Native and it was horrible- the lock bar looked like it was torn off rather than cut and the blade pivot was too tight and since it was a rivet there wasn't anything that could be done about it.

Still, I'd get another one- just not the cheap one.

maybe you got a bad one, my FRN native was perfect, very smooth opening, so that you could depress the lockbar and flip the knife open, though it was still very secure.

My Blue Native is like that but the FRN one was crap.  It was so bad that I'd even thought it was a fake for a while there until I'd seen a few others like that, although usually different models.  Yes, I could have gotten a bad one, but since any other one I get would have to be ordered online I'd rather spend the money on a better one rather than cheap out and take my chances with another FRN version.
