Anyone use a tough phone?
on: June 13, 2012, 11:13:42 AM
I've been using one of these since Feb, and it's the best mobile phone I've ever had :)

http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/mobile-devices/mobile-phones/bar/GT-B2710IKAXEU

It is very basic, but it stick's to what a phone should be imo, in that it has a great signal, amazing battery life, plus it's rediculously tough and waterproof and has a genuinly effective short range (think E01 on moon mode) torch on board which is idea for me :)

I'm thinking of getting one for my son for Xmas, but it's been delisted and replaced with a 2G phone, which would make it tough to get a signal around here ::)

So does anyone else use a tough phone? :)

I have the more basic Samsung B2100 Solid Extreme as a work phone. Perfect for work use, but a little too light on features for a personal phone for me

Can you get a decent signal?

2G is next to useless where I live :(

Never really had a problem with it Mike. Only time the signal I've struggled or reception has been squiffy, my personal phone (Nokia with a seperate provider) has struggled too, and it's just been background electrical "noise" from heavy machinery

I never had a mobile phone in my life, but now I changed my job I need one.
I need a tough phone and surfed the internet for information.
My first choice was also the rugged Samsung but I needs one with GPS and a bigger screen.
So I found the Motorola defy plus smartphone is the best for my needs.
But there is also a Motorola defy XT535, and that's the one I like to buy but
this one is just new and not for sale jet in europe, just in China and India.
So I have to wait a little time to buy my first mobile phone, but it will be the XT535.

I had an older version of that for a few years- the Samsung 7300 I think.  It was almost indestructible, although still not terribly water resistant, which as most of you know is a concern for me.

The Defy would have been my next choice, but it's not available in my area or with my carrier, but it seems to me that a rugged phone makes sense, regardless of whatever other features it may or may not have.  Unless you live on the International Space Station you are likely to encounter weather in some fashion or another.

I had Nokia 6250. That was a real undestructible phone.

Go for the Defy+!
I own a defy and it is the best phone i ever had. And i owned a lot including a galxy note.

The defy is not terribly shock resistant but it still feels more rugged in that regard than most other smartphones. On top if the ruggedness its a damn fine smartphone for the money.

The Defy is a good phone for weather resistance. I've submerged mine with no problems.

Nope.

When I find a tough phone with a 4.5" screen, Android ICS and an 8MP camera I'll be all over it, though.

My phone might not be tough, but my Otterbox Defender case sure is!  I've used the Defender case on my last three phones, and the last two phones still looked new when I sold them, and my current Samsung Galaxy Nexus has taken a couple of pretty nasty falls and you would never be able to tell looking at it.

Yup, I bought a Defender case when I bought my new phone and I don't believe the screen itself has ever been touched!  The sticker telling you how to change the battery is also still on the back of the phone itself, completely untouched.

Yes,

I Had the Nokia 3720 classic builders phone.
Had it for 2 years and it never missed a beat, great signal reception, water proof, dustproof and shockproof.

Then, just before christmas I was working away (shopfitter) and realised I'd forgotten my phone charger. Had all good intentions of buying another until a work colleague informed me the shop next door must be closing down (carphone warehouse) - sure enough, all stock was boxed up, out back their bin was filled with allsorts including a nokia charger that fitted mine. so, I  "borrowed" it - plugged the phone in and .....B A N G !! it blew up.
So, several months later, I still haven't replaced it (skint !!).

Miss it though, and will definately buy another  - very soon hopefully.

My husband drops his phone with a frightening frequency. He has the Otterbox Defender as well. Since he's had it, he's gone through 3 belt clip brackets (broke one, and broke the swivel clip on the other two). Those aren't terribly expensive to replace though. He's dropped his phone at least 30 times that I've seen in the last 5 or so years. Who knows how many I didn't see. The phone and the Defender case itself have no damage.

I was somewhat bothered to see how easily the clip on the case was broken- I'd expected something a lot tougher.  I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that has had trouble with it.

One of the great things about Otterbox is their warranty.  They sent me a replacement case for my Blackberry Storm, and one for my Galaxy Nexus, no questions asked, and I didn't have to send the other cases back to them.  They changed the design of the Storm case to make it work better with the phone, and with my Nexus, the phone had a bit of play in the case.  My wife also had her Commuter case for her iPhone replaced as she bought a purple/white case, and the white was impossible to keep clean (and she washes her hands more than a doctor!) so they sent her a black case instead.

Yup, I have the original Defy... I've accidentally dropped it a few times and it's survived with only minor scratches on the back... It's supposedly waterproof, and the gorilla glass supposed to be scratch resistant. I've had it about year, have no other case or screen protector on it and it's still pretty good shape imho. I tend to keep it in my pocket with the screen facing in towards my leg, I also carry it at work (I don't trust leaving it in my locker, people have had phones/wallets stolen in the past), but am not allowed to use it. There's a lot of dust and it gets banged around due to the heavy duty nature of my job. There are cases and screen protectors available if you want to add an extra layer of protection but I really don't feel like it's necessary. I have never tried the waterproofing aside from using it when it's raining, but the pictures sure look cool...

Obviously now they have released newer models Defy+ and Defy Mini which I assume are similar in most respects.

My only real beef is the lack of official updates to the Android OS, but that's nothing to do with the durability of the unit.
The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.

Just got my case from Lifeproof, It was $80.00 for the case,$29.00 for the belt clip, and they came out with the Life jacket which was another $40.00. Seems like a lot of money but it was well worth it as i found out on vacation last week.the phone went completely under water, went through a couple rainstorms and was dropped from about 6ft. with no problems.

Protective cases always sound expensive until the first time they save your phone!  If I hadn't spent the money on my protective case then I would have spent much, much more on the three phones I'd have had to replace mine with by now.

PS...I use a Tough Phone especially with my line of work..Bumps Bruises, and weather come with the territory as a Truck Driver..I needed a Phone that could handle that..I do not go out of the way to thrash on a Phone, and I do try to be reasonable..I wanted and got a phone that would be ok in a pinch and still be there when I needed it..Drops,Rainstorms,a sink dumping and my phone is still going strong.I do want to give gredit though to the NiteIeze case the last 3 phones including this one have lived in.Keeps my Phone close to hand and added protection from the elements and bumps and bruises of a Trades job too!

Isn't it fun working in the weather?  The modern world is designed in such a way that we all need to be carrying tech everywhere, and yet so little of it is designed for wet, cold etc.
