Serrations
on: June 26, 2012, 07:03:27 PM
Hello there :D

I've got a question regarding serrations for right and left handed users.

Almost all serrations are sharpened on one side only, and most manufacturers like Spyderco choose to have the left side of the blade sharpened (If the blade tip is facing away from you). This seems odd to me since most users are right handed, and a serrated blade with the other side sharpened would cut more efficiently (if you cut away from you).

Something I've noticed is that the serrated blade on the Leatherman Charge is sharpened on the right side (with the blade tip facing away from you), and in my experience cuts very efficiently (I'm right handed).

I guess you already know my question :D Why are most serrated blades sharpened on the left side?

Same reason chisel ground blade are done the same way even though most users are right handed, so it looks better.

From a manufacturing standpoint, it's just much easier to do it correctly that way. If the cutting tools don't cut both sides in perfect alignment, it'll leave small flat spots on the tips of the serrations. Also, they'd have to be cut at a much more acute angle on each side, to get the same total edge angle.
