A new pup in the house , a 4 legged BRUCE
on: July 06, 2012, 05:36:52 PM
We have been organising 'adoption' of a animal shelter dog for the last couple of weeks, a bit like adopting a child  :ahhh :ahhh(a bit of a rigmarole  ::)). Anyways Bruce the Kelpie X Jack Russell starts his 2 week trial today. I have been a fan of Bruce since I met him , now that we have him I love him , our other dog Kipper on the other hand is not such a fan  :ahhh :ahhh, Kip gets stropy at times with Bruce if we show Bruce attention. Hopefully Kip settles down & given Bruce is almost twice Kipper's size I hope they get along. Bruce has been very patient with Kip's bullying so far

Here he is  :D :D

Did not take him long to find his new bed  :D :D

Lounge will work too  ::) :D

Mat- this is hard I know, but you need to pay more attention to Kipper than Bruce.  Kipper's home has been interrupted by this new dog and he may view it as an encroachment on his territory.  As time goes by and Kipper accepts the upstart into the pack you can start to give him more attention.  Giving Bruce lots of attention now and scolding Kipper for getting jealous is a sure fire way to ensure that Bruce won't work out in your house.

What Def said, and, also, Kipper is a very handsome lad.

(Edit: Aargh! I meant Bruce, though Kipper is a great dog as well. :D )

Great looking dog, Mat!  He reminds me of my last pup, only smaller.  :)  But...an Australian named Bruce?  Someone at the shelter watching a bit too much Monty Python?   ::)

Thanks Steinar- I have spent most of my life with and working with them tends to be one of the few things I do very well.  People on the other hand, well I've given up on most of those!

Back to Bruce though- I was a bit rushed earlier.  Bruce doesn't know how things are meant to work in the new home and he'll be comfortable with any amount of attention, thinking it's the new life.  Basically he can't miss what he didn't have.  Kipper on the other hand can and will miss the attention he used to get and will likely act out as a result.  Bruce is invading Kipper's territory and Kipper is likely to get defensive unless you show him that Bruce isn't going to affect his standing in the pack.

Also, spend lots of time with both of them, preferably doing things like walking, running playing etc as that's how a pack bonds and keeping them worn out helps to keep skirmishes to a minimum as they are too tired to fight.

Very sound advice from Grant. Even though every part of you wants to play with Bruce and make him feel comfortable and at home, the best thing you can do for both dogs is show Kipper that he is still the top dog, and make sure that he feels loved, and once he becomes accepting of Bruce, they will work out themselves who is top dog.

Congrats on the new addition to your family!

Thanks guys

Yep the research we had done said the same thing  :tu: you guys know ya stuff  :D :D.

We bought tickets to the AFL football derby for tonight , well over a week ago & at that stage we had not heard back from the shelter. The main source of conflict appears Kipper being jealous of attention we give Bruce , so yep we are trying make Kip feel more special. I am not so sure about leaving them alone tonight  :ahhh :ahhh. I think they should be ok but Bruce got a bit whiny when the misses left for the gym this morning so I am not sure how he will be when we all leave tonight

Just got back from a 90min. walk & both dogs had behaved really well , 5mins home & Bruce tries to bite at Kip's neck  :ahhh. They separated easily & quickly though. I think they are both just trying to find their way in this new situation

Congrats on the new addition to the Sully home Mat! We've never introduced a new dog into our home that wasn't an offspring of the existing dog, so I'm afraid I don't have any advice, but what the guys are saying above makes a lot of sense. :salute:

Def I would not of thought the last couple of days would have been so stressful  :ahhh :ahhh worried that our much loved dog Kip might of gotten hurt & hoping Bruce's unsettled life would have some stability finally , it is not so good wanting something so badly to work out  :ahhh :ahhh. They seem to be settling but I think it will take at least a week to ten days

Dogs are social animals- they'll figure each other out sooner or later.  It'll be up to you as the leader to show them how to behave though, so don't let up on them.  They'll bond faster if they do more things together, so run them, walk them, play fetch with them- whatever you do keep them active.

When I brought Chinook into the house he was a year old and we already had Pete who was almost three.  Both were good with other dogs and seemed fine together all day and through the evening.  That night though Chinook got too close to me when I was asleep, and Pete was always very protective of me, especially when I was asleep.  He warned of Chinook, and Chinook who was too young and full of himself to take a hint stepped up and I awoke to two large dogs snarling and slamming into each other.  Pete came away from it with bite to the face which left a tear drop shaped scar on him for the rest of his life.  After that I don't recall another serious fight ever between them.  They were thick as thieves after that, each one's abilities complimenting the other's as they got into all kinds of bizarre messes together.
