I'm no SOG expert, but I'd say that's pretty early, and a great find! :tu:

I've had a chance to test out my PowerLock a little more extensively. As expected, the blade works well. The cap lifter seemed kinda small to me, but it handled the cap on a bottle of Jones Soda with nary an issue. While Victorinox need not worry about losing the title of Gold Standard of Multitool Scissors, those on the PowerLock work pretty well (and unlike SAK scissors, they do their best work at the tips). The awl works exceedingly well on the soft plastic of water bottles and my nicotine pouch cans. Hopefully I'll be able to take it to some leather soon.

Thanks for the feedback Farmer.

I can attest that the SOG awl is one wicked little beast; I've used it on coconuts and, thanks to its length, makes having fresh coconut water a breeze!

Well, I was not ready for Barry's challenge (to which I'm still very sorry about not participating) but, I am for Farmer's !!!

The handle finally arrived, and went quickly to work to have my custom Powerlock Traveler (seen here with my very first PL, a black oxide B61).

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Inspired by JonesE, I built it using a Powergrab's pliers head and let me tell you, what a gamechanger: with only a small modification to the PL's handles, and you gain: a pommel, a magnetic bit driver, a true needlenose tip, and a sleeker appearance, and all without loosing nothing but the cap crimpers (but you will still have anvil style crimpers so, nothing big for me).

Due to my work, I need to have bladeless tools at work so, decided to copy the S61TR down to the robertson but with a kick: I added the v-cutter and, since the small flat driver from the can opener was broken, reprofiled the opener to a full blade one; the rest of the tools is standard SOG affair. My only gripe is that I might look for an early, round tipped file, as the spare one I had is of the scored-lines-type and is almost useless (good for my nails though!). So far, it has rekindled my likeness to the PL series, and will probably be replacing the Bladed Bladeless for work EDC.   [ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]    [ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Those are some really cool mods, Juan. And I'll be looking forward to hosting a Power challenge; that will probably be late this year or early next year. That gives me plenty of time to add more SOGs!

I've gotten a little more experience with the PowerLock, and one thing I'm not overly fond of is the way the scissors are set up.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

The thumb lever is oriented so that it is more or less right up against the opposing handle. (I hope that made sense.) Such positioning makes pushing the thumb lever a bit tricky. I'm almost better off deploying the pliers when I want to use the scissors. If anyone has suggestions for a work-around, I'd be interested to hear them. I'm thinking the scissors will move out to make room for a V-cutter.

Farmer, after I read your impressions, I went back to my Powerlocks and, sadly, found no other more-comfortable option. I seldom use them and not for long, and hadn't noticed it but you're right; if pushing against the end of the lever/handle, it gets cumbersome as the thumb hits the tool's handle end; if pushing closer to the fulcrum, not enough force is produced amd is uncomfortable for the thumb, and if turning the tool to push with the index finger, it is awkward and uncomfortable. So, yes, I think there's no way  around it.

Juan, I think you're right. I can sorta understand why SOG engineered it that way (so the scissors don't have to be unfolded a la a Wave or Suspension NXT). Deploying the pliers while using the scissors is probably the best option for now.

My bladeless is proving itself today; my washer's lid switch burned in mid chore and I have a lot of laundry to do: pliers cut jumper wire, integrated bit driver removes back cover screws, file pushes cabin clips, and the v-cutter becomes a great wire stripper; needlenose helps in winding wire ends and once jumper 's in, laundry resumes! :woohoo: :woohoo:  [ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]    [ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]    [ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

HACK UPDATE!
seeing how the jumper worked, decided to take out the burnt connector, clean it, and reprofile it to become a solid jumper, protected by the OE housing. Worked great! This time, only the pliers and the file were used.  [ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

I'm not sure if I'll be online later tonight, but Chunky soup is on the menu. Can opener test result photos will be up before I go to bed tomorrow!
