My customized Charge - First mod
on: August 23, 2012, 05:08:25 PM
First off, here are the pictures you'll need to see what I've done. http://s11.photobucket.com/albums/a181/choltzapple/Custom%20Leatherman%20Charge%20Ti/

I took the Charge that my wife gave me a few years ago and finally made some changes I had been considering for a long time. I like the idea of the removable bit drivers, but the small one is useless for me and the large one just seems weak and is too short. It has never broken on me, but it worries me. I overcame the shortness by using the bit extender but I've never been happy with the way it's carried in the sheath. I'm constantly checking to make sure it hasn't fallen out and gotten lost. So I decided that I would swap the phillips driver and the smaller flat driver from my Kick into the Charge. This will allow me to have one card that carries the bit adapter and a few bits and I'll never worry about them.

The process went smoothly, didn't even lose any washers  :D I did have to make a couple minor changes however. I put the Kick flat driver next to the one that was already on the Charge. This caused two problems. Of course the tool wouldn't close completely, I knew that going in. However, once the plier rest was removed, it still wouldn't close. The driver was sitting on the spring and was still too tall, also it was so long that it got hung up on the thumb pad for the scissors. I wasn't going to remove the spring or cut the tools so I decided to swap the two flathead drivers around. Now the small flat drivers clears everything, but the large one is still too thick to allow the tool to close completely. This was a much easier issue to solve. I simply sanded about 1mm off the back side of the driver and everything fits beautifully! Now I just need to purchase the bit adapter for the Kick.

Thanks. It's not a complicated mod but that's part of the beauty. Simple enough for a beginner like me but it's
