first Spydie arrived today
on: August 30, 2012, 06:57:55 AM
finally added a Spyderco knife to my collection after hearing nothing but great things about them for years, and I've gotta say, the Delica 4 makes a great first impression.  :D

I got the version with ZDP-189 blade steel -- I'm really curious to see how this stuff holds up.  I've heard it's on par with S30V, but wanted to see for myself.

Don't have a ZDP one myself, just the standard VG10 with orange scales.  Awesome little knives... they really hit the sweet spot in blade size and compactness with the Delica.  Because of the higher carbon content of the ZDP, make sure you keep the blade clean, as they're more prone to rust than other new super-steels.

I had the same thought about hitting the sweet spot... the size + weight of this knife seem just about perfect for an EDC blade.

and thanks for the tip about the high carbon content.  :)

The delica is a great little knife. I personally like carrying larger knives most of the time, but I have gifted a few to people. (and kept one for myself.) I also have a caly 3 with zdp and its sort of a beater knife, I haven't had any rust problems myself, but I would say that zdp is a bit less resistant than other stainless steels. A little basic maintenance and it should be fine.

I was VERY surprised how nicely my Tenacious works  :o 8). I am keen to try a Spydie that is not a budget model some time in the future   the carbon fibre ones look good  ::) :D :D

I've been lusting after a Sage 1 and/or a Chaparral for a long time, but I can't bring myself to spend that much for a knife when I've got other things I need, and already have a few good Spydies.

I actually don't carry the Delica anymore, for the same reason I don't carry my Dragonfly 2; for cutting tasks that those blade sizes work well for, a SAK offers more utility for me.  I gave my DF2 to my wife for her backpacking kit, and the Delica to my son for his camping gear.  I just put my Endura 4 in my EDC bag though, as part of its reorganization.

Congrats on owning your first Spydey!  I'm curious too how that new steel proves to be.  Hopefully you can update us after you've used it a while  :D

Congrats!
The Delica is indeed a nice little knife.
I've been wanting to try ZDP.
Now you make me want to try it more.

I love Spyderco's so... the Caly 3 has been calling my name.. now even more so.

Heinz - I suggest you get that Chaparral. It's an excellent little knife. I love mine. Though I just kicked it out of the pocket because I want to carry my Wilson Combat for a day or two.
But if you're thinking about getting it, I suggest you do. It's very well priced.

thanks guys (and gals)!  I can definitely see why Spydercos are such popular and well-loved knives.  the Delica is quickly becoming my favorite folder in my knife collection (which, admittedly is much smaller than my MT collection.)  :D

Haven't had much of a chance to really put the ZDP-189 blade through the wringer yet, but the edge is holding up well so far with small, everyday-type cutting tasks, and there is no sign of any rust anywhere.  :tu:  granted, it hasn't even been a full 3 weeks yet, and I haven't been carrying it every single day, so I'll have to give a full report in a few more weeks.  :salute:

thanks for all the suggestions.  I'd love to add another Spydie to the mix -- top candidates are Dragonfly 2, Endura 4, or Paramilitary 2 -- but there's the never-ending debate of whether to use the funds for a new knife, or a new MT, or another fixed blade, or parts for mods, or...  ;)

I think the Endura is the best value of any full size folder on the market right now.  I have the FRN FFG one in gray, and it's one of my favorite knives of all time.  Lots of reviews on the Tenacious call it the 'poor mans' or 'every day mans' Military, but I think that designation is more appropriate for the Endura.  The only shortcoming I think it has is that the ergos on the handle could be a bit better, and that it should have some jimping on the first finger cutout.  After all, it's got it on the spine, so why not put some on the belly of the scales too?

I haven't handled a Para 2 myself yet, but from what I understand about its size and price, it's not that much less than a Millie, which has more blade.  So unless the overall size or the blade length needs to be less, why not just spring the extra few clams for the regular Millie?

The para 2 has a compression lock instead of the liner lock on the millie. Overall the para 2 is probably one of the best folders available right now. In fact its in my pocket right now. The only complaint I have with our is the texture on the g-10, I prefer a little less rough. Even then its still one of my favorites.

+1, though I like it rough for better grip!

Coincidentally, my Delica 4 in VG-10 arrived a week ago :)

My third Spyderco, the Endura and Q that also are in the pictures are about 10 years old.
So far, I'm impressed with it's performance :tu:

I traded my first Delica for some slipjoints.  I was happy with the deal, but really missed the Delica after a while.  The one that came today was actually a gift, so I have no intention of this one going anywhere.  It's going to see plenty of use though.....  :tu:
