Eddie's right about building your own,you can acquire the components as money's available, and get exactly what you want. I've been thinking about doing the same for building up my perfect road bike.

The only trouble is that the individual components are just so expensive over here, it would end up costing far more to do it that way rather than just getting a bike of the shelf :(

Micky, here's some pix of my bike that you requested yesterday. These pix were all taken indoor because of the heavy downpour. Sorry for the poor pix quality.

Eddie

I built this bike more than 5 years ago and almost all components are Shimano Alivio. The frame is made of Chrome-Molybdenum alloy, spokes are stainless steel, rims, seat post, handle bar are aluminum alloy.

Brake levers and cables

Front shifter

Rear shifter

Front brakes

Rear brakes

Front deraileur (Suntour XC Pro), front sprockets and cartridge type bottom brackets (Shimano), Chrome molybdenum alloy frame, aluminum alloy pedals(Shimano)

Rear deraileur and rear sprockets (Shimano), chain DID)

Quick release nut and rear hub with rubber cap to present sand and water getting inside the hub (all Shimano)

Quick release nut and front hub also with rubber cap

You may want to check out a Smith and Wesson bike.  They have a lot of cargo racks and they are probally tougher than most bikes.  I have a Mountainsmith.  I have no Idea who makes them but I like it and it has served me well.  I bought my bike on clearance orig. $550 and I got it for $199.  It may not be one for the fine bike lover but it rides just fine.  If I had it to do over I would have bought my friends Cannondale that he was selling but I did not have the $500 at the time and I wanted to ride.  I ampretty hard on bikes and my mountainsmith keeps on going, I have not stripped out the drivetrain yet which is more than I can say for other makes I have ridden over the years.

Well this is the one I got...

It's a Mundo Yuba, and it's probably the strongest bike on the market :)

Very nice bike with and strong frame Micky, but it looks heavy.

Aren't you planning to install an engine like this to your bike?

Looks like lots of places to tie the boy down to!

What mods have you got planned?

It looks robust enough to handle the curb to curb potholes we call streets around here. What mods do you have in mind, anything to the drivetrain? Frame?

As far as mod's go, I'd like to find some robust, high load capasity, higher pressure tyres for it as the one's fitted are VERY slow and squidgy as there max psi is only 40!

I'd like to lower the gearing too, as at the moment bottom gear is about 35 inches and gives my (you guessed it) left foot a hell of a pounding on the long steep hills around here :(

Long term, I'd like to convert it into a long range tourer (as opposed to a shortish range hauler) and maybe add an electric motor too (as soon as they come down to sensible money ::))

ATM though I'm very happy with the barge, only trouble is my boy want's to call it Holly (after I explained that it had to have a girls name :D) and I want to call it the ''Litaney of Fury'' after a Battle Barge in one of my books ::)

Sorry, I just noticed this and had to comment....

Eddie,  you really need to lower that front derailleur.  The outer plate should be riding only 3-4mm from the large chain ring.  You will have to readjust the cable if you move it also.

Nutsak, thanks for the advice. I will do some adjustment to the deraileur this weekend and see if the shifting will be smoother.
