Dunc,if you get the chance, ask the aircrew if and when they'll transition over to the Merlin.

You've got to imagine it'll be soon, but I'll be sad to see the old Seaking go, it's such an aviation icon, and God above know's how many lives it's saved :)

If your Sea Kings are anything like ours, they have earned their rest!  Ours still fly, but with less and less reliability.  You can't have a rescue fleet that needs to be rescued all the time.

They are respectable old craft, but they seriously need to be mothballed.

If ever there was a helicopter equivalent to the DC-3,it would have to be either the Sea King or Bell Huey. The Merlin caused a minor flap when it was selected to be built under license as the new Marine Corps One,replacing the Sea King.

I think its in 2011 that the Gov. is scrapping the RAF Search and rescue  >:( The new Merlin is not deemed suitable for the role . Air sea rescue will be under the M.C.A  ( Maritime Coastguard Agency , i.e HM Coastgurd ) . I'm not sure but I think Bristows have got the contract for the helicopters .
