WHAT! Tape measures?
on: March 07, 2008, 12:42:32 PM
That's right, tape measures. Yet another one of my collections.

This is my modest collection at work. I have at least 30 more at home. ::) I know you can't wait for that!

You have me beat- I think I only have two, both inexpensive models designed to be nowhere I can find them when I need them!  :o

I wonder if I should start collecting them and leave them all over like I do with multitools and SAKs so there's always one laying around somewhere? :D

That's exactly what I do, leave them everywhere around the house, garage, car and shed.

At work I always carry one on my belt, that's why there are only 12 in that pic. Wait 'till i get home! :o I found about 25 in less than a minute last night.

If I was to keep one clipped to my belt at all times that would likely mean I'd misplace my pants when I needed them!

Have you got any of those laser measuring tapes?  The ones for measuring rooms, where it sends a beam out either side and tells you how far?  I have wanted to get one of those for some time but I'm not sure if they are any good or not.

You know, I just happen to have one of those at home (I think). I had forgotten all about it until you mentioned it. I even know exactly where it is (if I have one)!

I'll check it out when I get home.

Awesome!  Thanks- I don't see too many of them in use so I thought it might be one of those gadget things designed to be sold to friends of handymen around Christmas time!

I like tape measures, too, especially those which are marked in both inches and centimeters.  The aren't as widely available as they should be.

I carry a small tape measure in a pants pocket and one in the glove compartment of each family vehicle.

Whats so special about the weird looking one of the far left in the middle row? Why is it that shape I mean?

Send Travis a message- he has some promo ones with his contact info printed on them.  He may still have some left- it's about 3 ft long, has metric and imperial markings and a small LED light.

If he doesn't have any left, let me know.  I think he may have sent me an extra one.  May have to do some digging though...

It's a low profile tape that uses two smaller springs instead of one big one.

I played with it a little while before I took the pics and it didn't seem very accurate. I need to play with it some more, I think it can be calibrated.

Thanks Calvin- I'll be interested to see if you can get it working properly.

On occasion I've had to develop a security plan for a building that had been renovated and there were no existing accurate floor plans.  In that instance I need to work one up, and I usually use Broderbund's 3D Architect programs for it.  To do that I need reasonably accurate measurements, and there isn't always a lot of time to spend running measuring tapes the length and breadth of each room, so I thought maybe one of those laser tapes might make that faster and easier.  I don't need super accurate measurements- within a couple of inches is usually good enough.

I carry a small 3 foot tape measure and sometimes a 6 inch rule in my pocket. Larger tape measures live in each vehicle and are distributed throughout the house and basement workshops.

I don't collect them, per se.   A portion of my "inventory" is shown below.

That's a pretty nice collection. Having tape measures spread all around the place makes life easier. I sometimes wonder why I am always measuring things!

The 6 inch rule is one of my favorites. I only have about 6 or 7 of those but have rules (or scales) in various lengths from 6 inches to 4 foot. I bought a nice Starrett 4 foot scale about 20 years ago and paid $75 for it. It has markings cut into the scale on all 4 edges, the finest being a hundredth of an inch (that's one hundred marks every inch) all marked in black on a silver scale. Just a beautiful tool.

I have about 4 measures, ranging from cheap to slightly less cheap. And a tiny 3ft one from my old workplace logo.
