Spyderco Endura ZDP-189 Slicergrind
on: December 04, 2012, 05:34:17 PM
A couple of days ago i modified this 5 year old Spyderco Endura ZDP-189 from a saber/flat ground to a saber/hollow ground knife with the help of my trusted Tormek T7 fitted with an SB-250 Black Silicon stone & a modified knife clamp.

Previously the knife looked like this (with an already reprofiled edge of 25 degrees inclusive):

Now the knife looks like this.
Although the edge was only marginally thinned to 22,5 degrees inclusive, the area just behind the edge is much thinner now, making the knife cut better noticeably.

You certainly like to make interesting modifications to your knives! I doubt I'd have the nerve to try something like that.

Outstanding job- how long did it take?

It's a standard accessory that comes with any Tormek machine, but you can buy them separately too.
Very handy.

About two hours of grinding, as quite a lot of steel had to be removed.
ZDP-189 in it's hardened state is quite some wear resistant stuff i can tell you,  :D

The edge bevel itself was done on my 60 grit Rubber Wheel, after which i stropped it a little on leather with 6 micron diamond compound.
Rubber Wheels are custom made from natural rubber mixed with silicon carbide grit, and mine measure 8 inches in diameter.

Here are some pics:

Just because it's possible i thinned the edge of the ZDP-189 Endura a bit further with the help of my Tormek, and according to the angle gauge it now measures 17.5 degrees inclusive.
To have enough strength the edge needed a very small bevel (just visible, but not measurable for me), and i can cut into the edge of a piece of laminated desk forcefully without rolling or chipping, and also without any noticeable loss of sharpness.
Thickness behind the edge now: 0.18-0.20 mm.

A local store added tormek to their catalog a while back, man I really want a set! Too bad they are pretty expensive and I really don't need one often.
