Politicians & Tools Don't Go Together
on: December 27, 2012, 12:34:28 AM
It occurred to me that politicians are hardly ever pictured with a tool. Sometimes they'll hold a shovel for a ground-breaking, but that's about it. The explanation is either that they don't believe being with a tool presents the right image or that they don't ever use tools. In either case, it's an anti-blue collar mentality.

Politicians are tools?

Maybe the reason you don't see politicians with tools is because tools are for people who actually work, accomplish things, or have an idea of what they are doing?

Or maybe useful items (like EDC stuff) tends to stick together, leaving politicians in the cold?

I'm not surprised that you never see politicians with multitools- the fact is there aren't a lot of exciting situations where you would need one, so the few times they might get used it's hardly good for a photo op.  Also, being the red headed step child of the knife industry, it might be seen as bad press for a politician to be using a "weapon."

You also have to remember that one handed or locking blades are considered weapons in places, even if they are attached to a set of pliers.  Also, years ago the powers that be in Michigan tried to outlaw multitools because they were "burgular's tools" and no one wants to risk promoting the idea that the government might steal from people.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Bowie

Quote
James "Jim" Bowie (pronounced pron.: /?bu?i?/ BOO-ee[1]) (c. 1796 – March 6, 1836), a 19th-century American pioneer, soldier, smuggler, slave trader, and land speculator, played a prominent role in the Texas Revolution, culminating in his death at the Battle of the Alamo.

Other than "smuggler" and "slave trader" I don't see anything that alludes to a political career.

Rubbish!

I have seen many pictures of politicians with tools.

Scissors, when cutting ribbons, shovels, as mentioned before, when planting comemorative trees, trowels when putting the cement on the foundation stones of new buildings and so on....

I do not think there is a politician around who has not been pictured with at least one of the above.

They are just regular people..... :salute: :salute:

And Arnie has been pictured/filmed with a variety of tools on several occasions

Jimmy Carter Uses them. My Pops has a picture of him and Carter building a wall during a Habitat For Humanity build.  And it wasn't just a photo op. Carter was there for the whole build and my dad says he hardly took a break.  I also believe Carter had a Wood Workshop in the Whitehouse.

I could be wrong, but I think the OP was referring to multitools specifically.  At least that's how I read it.

Def, possibly, but when do we actually reply on what the OP asks, anyway   :D :D

He did mention shovels, however and blue collar. Multitools are not that blue collar; too gadgety.
