58mm scissors on a 84mm vic -- pics
on: November 28, 2009, 02:07:44 AM
So I was working on my alox rambler and thought I should use the leftover parts.  I remembered someone asking about putting 58mm scissors on the back of larger knives, so I thought I would give it a try.  I used an 84mm and the scissors point sticks out, but is protected by the key ring, so it won't catch on anything.  I used the smaller diameter brass rod to fit the 58mm scissors and made sure to peen it well.  Snap on all the tools is perfect.  Not sure if the scissors would stick out on a 91mm or not.  After I was done I realized it would look cleaner if I kept the corkscrew and replaced the awl.  In the end it is a perfectly usable mod.

It might be interesting to use the sides from a non-cutout knife like a bantam.  You would need the backspring from a knife with tools on the back spring, and it would require drilling of the sides for the extra pin.  It also has some interesting potential for alox, but again you would need to add the extra pin.

Well done. Looks a bit awkward to use though...like those Wagner pens.

Nice!  I really like the Alox Rambler!  Waiting for that certain swiss guy to get his shipment.  With my new EDC line up I'm planing I believe an Alox Rambler will eventually bump the MiniChamp Silver-Tech from my keychain, the LED will be missed a bit.

That is a very cool scissors adaptation as well, looks like you and another person executed the same mod at almost the same time.  How do you find they work?  I'd be interested in trying this out, I don't really like the Phillips on the backspring, don't mind the corkscrew though.  With the scissors on the backspring one could put together some very slim knives.

Was this ever expanded upon?  I asked Steve to look into it, but he thought it was a no go.  My super secret idea was to make an alox cadet with scissors and awl (or rambler phillips) as backtools.  It is an interesting idea still!
Lurking with a large collection of sharp knives!
