Electrical help?
on: January 17, 2013, 07:06:31 PM
As you should pretty well all know by now, I am horrible when it comes to electricity, so I was hoping you could all help me with something.

I just purchased a replacement power cord for my laptop and I want to make absolutely certain that it's the right one before I plug it in.  The plug fits into the computer properly (or at least it seems to) and I specifically asked the seller to check the model laptop I have, and they did indeed confirm it was the right one.  Even so, some of the numbers on it aren't the same so I thought I'd check.

Original:
Input- 100-240V~1.3A  50-60Hz
Output- 19V (long line with three little lines under it) 3.95A

Replacement:
Input- 100-240V~1.5A 50/60Hz
Output- 19V (long line with three little lines under it) 3.42A

Is that safe?  It would be inconvenient to have my house burn down right about now.

The output is a bit less Amps then your old one, but thats max output draw, I doubt your laptop is going to draw that much.  If it was me I'd go ahead and use it, but Im no expert either, so maybe wait for someone that is... :D

The worst that will happen with the new one is that it won't have enough oomph to do the job; can't hurt to try it.

Chances are, your laptop wouldn't function at all if the power were incorrect.  On the other hand if it does burn out, it had poor circuitry protection, and you should upgrade anyway...

in any case, a lower output amperage should not harm the laptop, it may be lower than the requirements... which model exactly is the laptop?
The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.

Toshiba Satellite A200- FT2 or something. I'd have to check when I get home to confirm.

In that case, no worries. Good power supply protection built in.

I'd have said: not very sophisticated power system - you'll be fine.

Toshiba is one of the few makers left that use a simple DC (2-connector) input.

If it were a HP or Dell, they have a simple comms system to verify the manufacturer of the adapter. They use the same physical connector with 3 contacts, but they're pinned out differently. A dell pack will fit in a HP, but it won't work, and vice versa.
