Best movies of all time
on: March 23, 2008, 05:57:04 PM
Dunno if this has been done before on this forum, but what the hey... Just thought this would be a nice way to spend the time. Plus, it's a good way to suggest great movies for those who might not have seen them.

Here's my list of what I consider to be "cinematic masterpieces"... Truly "must see" movies:

Aliens
Dances With Wolves
E.T.
Pulp Fiction
Schindler's List
The Shawshank Redemption
The Silence of the Lambs
Titanic

And here's my list of (merely) excellent flicks:

A Few Good Men
Alien
Alien 3
Alive
Apollo 13
Awakenings
Backdraft
Bull Durham
Cape Fear
Cast Away
Contact
Deep Impact
Erin Brockovich
Lethal Weapon
Lethal Weapon 2
Mask
Men In Black
Philadelphia
Robocop
Terminator
Terminator 2
The Abyss
The Fly
The Fugitive
The Hunt for Red October

And here's a list of movies which I thought were surprisingly entertaining, despite being fraught with too much corniness and/or too many goofs'n flubs:

Batman (1989)
Blue Thunder
Conspiracy Theory
Dante's Peak
Die Hard 2
Executive Decision
Jurassic Park
Jurassic Park 2
Jurassic Park 3
Predator
Pretty Woman
Short Circuit
Top Gun
True Lies

Yeah, really! I cannot believe Star Wars wasn't mentioned. A true classic, as is The Matrix, though maybe not for TCM-channel lovers. Titanic? Maybe... but it wouldn't be on my list. What about Singin' In The Rain? I have to be in the mood for a musical but that's definitely a classic, if not the most perfect film.

Caddyshack-IMHO the best comedy of all time.

Actually, Caddyshack was my favorite low-brow comedy for quite a while - until I saw "Dumb and Dumber."

There's just something about the dynamic duo of Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels driving across the US in their dogmobile that is timeless...

Still tickles my funny bone every time I come across it on TV, even though I've seen it a dozen times or so...

When they asked Jeff Daniels in an interview how he could act so stupid, he said he just looked over at Jim Carrey and that was his inspiration!

Jim Carrey is well known for being WAY over the top, but it's the little nuances that he throws in that shows that he's a real genius- like how he kept using the breath spray but never managed to get it in his mouth!  :D

Lets see, the grown up in me says

Mississippi Burning
Shawshank redemption
Clockwork Orange
Fight Club
Silence of the Lambs
Dances with Wolves

Then the predominantly juvenille side says...

Blazing Saddles
Smokey and the Bandit
Holy Grail
Blazing Saddles
Caddyshack
Tenacious D and the pick of Destiny
Nacho Libre

and how come no one added Brokeback Mountain??   ??? :D

A fair percentage of people - many women especially - just don't appreciate "Dumb and Dumber."  To those people, "Dumb and Dumber" is not particularly funny, just groaningly stupid.

"Dumb and Dumber" humor is similar to "Three Stooges" humor - a lot of people just don't "get it" and never will.
