How ED is your EDC?
on: March 26, 2008, 03:26:00 PM
Our acronym EDC for every day carry, caused me to ponder as I loaded my pockets the other day:  Just how "every day" is your every day carry?

I list my EDC is a SwissTool Original, Vic Pioneer Rancher, Vic rambler and Maglite AA LED.  That would be correct for Monday through Friday, but I tend to vary a little on the Weekends.  I always have a SwissTool, either Original or X on me and the Rambler is on my keyring, so it is almost always there, but the companion knife and light are flexible.

What is your experience?  Do you have a regular weekday and weekend pattern?

On the weekends, I often carry my SOSAK EvoGrip 16 as my companion piece and rarely carry the flashlight.  On Sundays, I seem to lean toward the SwissTool X.(Yes, even when I go to church.)

I guess it says something when it takes longer to decide which pocket knife to carry than it does what clothes to wear.

I will have my multiplier on my belt on the weekend but don't carry it typically to my computer cubeyland.  I always have a SAK on me.

I find that I that I don't EDC more than a knife blade these days, I leave a tool in my lunchbox in case I need a screw driver or pliers but that's about it. I do feel a shame, all these awesome tools and never using them! I think when I get my hands on the fabled Skeletool I will have a tool that will see more action. I mainly use a knife first and formost, everything else is just perks. 99% of the time I carry the SF Delta, good for everything I throw at it. The XTi I was carrying was nice too, but the weight kills me, and if all I used was the blade.....well the weight doesn't justify the use of only one tool. So, do I EDC.....not really, but I hope to in the future  :pok:

I vary my EDC a lot anyway, but due to the great laws in this country  :D  I have to be careful at what I am carrying in certain places, so  where I am going greatly affects what I carry.

The only tools I carry that qualify for ED are my Stayglow Rambler and ARC-AAA flashlight.  All other items are variable, such as:

Which full-size SAK to carry (many possibilities)
Which flashlight to carry (many possibilities)
Carry my Swisstool Spirit or not

The day of the week (weekday or weekend) does have a bearing on these variables.  I always carry a SAK suitable for working on computers during the week but on the weekends I'm outdoors more, so I will alter my carry accordingly.

My EDC varies almost constantly.  At work I usually have a full sized multi and my Gerber Infinity Ultra.  While the light tends to stay the same, the tool changes at least weekly, sometimes even nightly if there's a particular reason.  Where I work I am not only the doorman, I am also the videographer and a maintenance guy... and whatever else needs to be done!

As such, if I know I need to tear apart a lock or ice machine I'll bring a tool that's more specialized for bolts or prying.  Otherwise I'll carry something more generalized for those jobs that just pop up.  One night I was on stage rewiring a battery contact for an active pickup system in a band member's bass while the rest of the band played on!

I will say though that the adjustable wrench feature of the SpyderWrench/ByrdWrench or the Guppie did come in handy a few times for jobs that could have been done with pliers, but went much easier with the wrench!

My EDC always includes a Swisstool RS ( unless I'm going somewhere where I could get in trouble for carrying it , and thats hardly ever ) . Its complimented by a Swisschamp at work , a Climber at home . A Spyderco UKPK or Spyderco Atlantic salt are also often added .Always have a Vic 2X AA LED torch nearby too.

I've got two distinct EDC's :), Work) Spirit and a 58mm classic SD, plus either a Farmer or Wenger Patriot :), Everything else) Swisstool X, a 58mm Mini Champ, and a Farmer :)

Some time's I'll chuck in a LM or a Gerber into the mix, but they generally just remind me how much better the Swiss stuff is :D
Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

Have a arc aaa on the way for neck lanyard.

That's the way I've been carrying mine--on a neck lanyard with my Rambler--and I love it.  The Novatac is extremely reliable as you know, but I also like knowing that I have one of the most reliable lights made hanging from my neck at all times.

Generally I am quite stuck in my way with my EDC, I carry a Juice S2, Orb Raw, keys and wallet.

I will sometimes swap around, normally the Juice for my Kick (which now has a clip) and today I am carrying my new OHT   :climber:

My EDC (the relevant stuff) is a charge, a micra, a benchmade 921 and since I got it a few weeks ago, a surefire l1. Anytime I'm out of the house, those are on me. At home usually the charge gets put on the desk.

Walking the dog I often leave the charge at home, but bring the knife and flashlight. If I'm in sweats, there's an excellent chance I have the knife and the flashlight even indoors.

At the moment I have a pretty set patern:

Monday, Wednesday, Friday= Juice S2 or KF4. I'm in classes and these don't raise many eyebrows but are plenty "tool" for me to be happy.

Tuesday, Thursday= Squirt P4. I'm at a hospital and that makes me extra knife-conscious. (Which is silly, but, oh well...)

Weekends & Evenings= Whatever seems like fun to play with and/or fits the occasion. Tonight it the Charge Ti.

My edc Varies a bit these days.  I have been packing my GAK a lot.  I also usually carry my fisher astronaut pen and my atwood mini prybaby.  At work I carry my U.S. army "Demo" knife.  For those not familliar with this knife it is basically a Boyscout knife without the fancy stag or plastic scales.  It has a softer steel blade that sharpens easily and the darn thing is indestructable.  At $12 it was a good buy for what I use it for.  Today I carried my Case golfers knife because I went golfing.  I use my swisstool when I go shooting or fishing but I havent done much of that lately so they have only been worn occosionally this winter.  If I dont have any of the above mentioned tools with me I have my stay glo climber or my alox cadet.

When it's all said and done most likely my upcoming Cx; a few card tools (SwissCard/SurvivalCard) and the Nitecore Defender Infinity. As Grant mentioned and as an alternative to the Cx; I like the Spyderench for the adjustable wrench in certain situations and the Zebralight is so tiny/handy that it's tough not to throw in your pocket or neck carry (in reality; this is all most need light-wise 'most of the time' anyways).`
I'm probably also going to start carrying around some of the (new?) Celox 2oz. packets just as soon as they get their on-line marketplace up supposedly next week (need to find out if there are any temp. limitations).

I EDC the same stuff 7 days a week.

If I'm dressed I have all of my EDC gear. Here's a list of my EDC items.
Leatherman BO Charge Ti
Leatherman Micra
Benchmade Griptilion drop point blade in D2 with B2T coating
Scripto VU lighter-I don't smoke & the fluid doesn't leak or dry out
brass match case with compass-wind & waterproof matches from REI
Space bullet pen
Keys
Photon 2 red LED
ARC AAA
Surefire E2D-or could be Surefire L1 or A2
Novatac 120P
cell phone
ear plugs-job requirement
bandanna
wallet-P38

At the moment I also have a spy capsule with ibprophen, but I usually don't carry that.

Once I'm undressed for the night, I wear a neck lanyard with a ARC AAA with a red LED. I'm old enough that I usually get up a time or two during the night to go to the bathroom and the red LED doesn't blind me or wake me up too much so that I can go right back to sleep.

That is quite a bit of gear to have.  Although, during my time as an archaeologist I probally caried quite a bit more gear but I kind of had to.

I wear Carhartt bibs. They have built in suspenders and lots of pockets. Before I got so fat that bibs were the most comfortable I just used holsters and wore jeans. I really liked RipOffs holsters. Now that I don't wear a belt I just use pockets.

  • Weekends:  New Wave, Fenix P2D, Arc AAA-P, 1/4" hex bit set, cell phone (all in MaxP M-2 waistpack); Micra, P-38, CountyComm MicroWidgy and Peanut Lighter (in pocket)

Good one Eddie.

Lately the only time I change my multitool and light EDC is when I got something new. I have used the same watch and lighter for years and have pretty much come to the conclusion that I will always have to have a Vic Farmer on hand. So I pretty much only change the multi and light.

Prime,

I permanently EDC my Charge TTi since I got it last January. I always supplement my main EDC with my 20 year Wenger Backpacker. I have 2 Gerbers but those 2 are unused until now. I just feel comfortable with the Charge. Before the Charge t'was my Wave, and before the Wave t'was my Supertool and Kick.

Hey Hoghead, do you remember figuring out which model of lighter that was over on CPF?

IMHO, that Scripto is the finest lighter there is for use outdoors.

The fuel lasts for years without drying out and you can tell at a glance how much fuel is left in the reservoir.

Plus - in a fire starting emergency situation - you can quickly unscrew the plug and pour out a little fuel to encourage wet wood to start.

Wish Scripto still made those lighters.

My work EDC is my ST with bit kit(my climber has mysteriously disappeared) an all weather pen (kindly gifted by Roadie) and a 2 AA led mag lite I ahve went to replace this with the likes of a Fenix T1 or a Surefire but it's the cost of purchase and the batteries that put me off.
Off duty my Swiss champ a space pen and a bog standard mini maglite can be found on me at all times and if I really have to I will carry the most hated of all objects a cell phone .

When the thread started I called it by a different and incorrect name. Later in the thread someone had the correct name and a link where you could buy them, that's where I got mine. They are chargeing collector prices, but atleast you can get them.

Mine says "VUiLighter by Scripto inc." on the metal that is around the wick.

I was familar with them because one of my friends carried one and always sang it's praises. He was right.

I never bought them when I smoked because I used Zippos. As I remember it they were in the $5 to $8 range around 1970. There was a big display of them in the liquor store.
