repair father's old PST
on: February 09, 2013, 09:33:40 PM
I'm relatively new to the multitool world, and I need a little help. My father has an old PST that he's had for over 20 years now. It has the AOPA (airplane owners and pilots association) logo on it. My mom gave it to him as a wedding present, and it has extreme sentimental value to him. Last month he broke the tip of the knife off and of course was upset. My mom got him a new one, a Wingman, that he likes very much and says it's better made than the PST. Although he isn't disappointed with the Wingman, he really loves his PST. As the PST has the AOPA logo on it and has a special sentimental value, I want to repair it for him. I'm not sure how difficult that would be, or how expensive. I do know that they all have the 25 year warranty, but I'm not sure how that works or if this is covered even. Thank you very much, and all help of any kind is appreciated.

Hi and welcome to the forum!

I've not had any call to use LMs warenty service, but if you were to send it in,be clear that replacement of the tool is not an option.

Other thing to look at doing is get a beater PST,say off eBay,strip the blade from the beater and use it to replace the the damaged one in your dads tool
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

Are you located in the US? if you mark the warranty form as "sentimental" and indicate that you do not want the tool replaced (like kirk said), then you should be fine. Leatherman's warranty service is second to none, and this would definitely be covered.  :tu:

Everything is covered under the Leatherman warranty. You should be fine.

Here's a return form for north america.

and some more info on it.

OK, thank you all very much. So all I have to do is fill it out, print it, and send it in? And yes, I'm in the US. This may be a stupid question, but should I fill it out in my name or his? I want to keep this a secret and surprise him. Thank you for all the help.

no problem!  we're a helpful bunch around here.  :D

you can fill it out in your name if you want to surprise him.  they mostly need that info for the return shipping.  and yes, all you have to do is print/fill out the form (be sure to mark it as sentimental!), and put the form in the package with the tool, and send the whole thing to Leatherman.  I've never had to use their warranty service myself, but I believe their typical turnaround time is about 2 weeks, and most of that is shipping time.

FYI -- if you mark it as sentimental, and they can't repair the tool for some reason, they will ship it back to you as-is.  I doubt there will be any problems repairing the main blade of a PST, but just wanted to let you know.

Great! Only problem is I need to think of a good reason why it's missing for that long. I live on the east coast, so shipping isn't exactly going to be fast.

You may want to email leatherman or contact them via instagram or Facebook and see what they recommend. They will definitely take care of it but I'm just not sure if they still have any PST knives to replace it with since its out of production.

Keep us updated! Good luck.

I reckon they still would have a spare PST blade or 2   :D :D.

From memory the factory does salvage undamaged parts from returned warranty tools to use in repairs  .

Like everyone has said I reckon Leatherman will sort it no problems mate  :tu: :tu:. I would be tempted to put a small note in saying the PST has a very high sentimental value .

As too the delay , could you say to your dad (if he asks ;) :D)you have dropped it off at the local Cabela's store , or the like, to be assessed & see if the Leatherman sales rep can have a look at it  . If your dad asks I would say ' Now dad your Leatherman is VERY old & I am not sure it is still under warranty & I am not sure if a broken blade is even covered'  >:D :D :D. Leatherman wil fix it mate  :tu: :tu: :D

I'll be mailing it on monday. My dad usually keeps it on his desk in his sheath. Until it gets back, I have replaced it with my mom's PST. If he takes it out he'll probably notice it. If he does, I'll say I was looking at the 2 PSTs and must have put the wrong one in his sheath. If he asks me to go get it, I'll pretend like I'm looking for it and tell him I lost it. At that point he'll probably figure out I'm at least trying to fix it. Hopefully it doesn't come to that so I won't have to keep making up elaborate lies.

Hey,

If you're looking to repair it yourself, which isn't too difficult really, I have a spare PST blade I'll gladly send to you free of charge.
Just PM me if you'd like it.

This is a great read, and I'm hoping this turns out well. I have heard nothing but good from Leatherman as far as their warranty work goes. It WOULD be super-cool if you got it back before he even noticed it was gone.

Let us know. I love this kind of story.  :tu:

Sorry, but I forgot to let you all know. It came back perfectly fixed, no issues at all. I gave it to my dad who was surprised as he hadn't noticed it was gone. He is very happy and satisfied.
