What Dashboard Camera?
on: February 21, 2013, 01:00:03 AM
Hello!
After watching the dashboard camera videos of the meteorite in Russia and all the accidents caught on camera while driving on youtube AND having been on the recieving end of other peoples bad driving ive decided its time to get myself a dashboard camera.

Has anyone got one or know of one to reccomend? Im after something small that doesnt have to be wired into the car, not noticeable enough to have to remove it everytime i park up and leave the car, and prefferably fit behind the rear view mirror out of sight to myself while driving...

Any information or advice will be much appreciated  :tu:

You can buy any number of inexpensive dash cams on eBay that would suit your needs.  I use either my Contour or GoPro cameras as dash cams because I prefer to have multiple uses for something rather than a dedicated cam just for dash use.

Also, I'd suggest getting something that shoots in HD as they are pretty cheap nowadays and if you ever need to use it better resolution is more likely to show details like who is driving and license plates- details that may not show up in a lower resolution video.  Full 1080 is probably not necessary, but 720 should be your minimum.

I heard about this too - apparently Russian traffic cops are rather fond of bribes and such,  so a lot of people have starting using dashcams for that reason, hence catching great footage of the meteorite.

I'm not against getting one myself these days... so many crooks trying to sue you for every tiny thing they can get away with

I'd also like to hand the footage over weekly to the police to assist them in fining people for driving around like idiots, on the phone, running red lights... we have a pretty poor standard around here sadly.

I have a couple of DV 80 style ones, like this:
 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Small-Cute-4-in-1-Mini-DV80-Video-Sound-Recorder-DVR-Camera-PC-Cam-Take-photo-/160917438243?pt=US_Security_Cameras&hash=item25776d3f23

which I use on bikes etc.
They also come with attachments for cars for free. You need a mini sd card (I use 8Gb ones)
Their quality is surprisingly good and they are very simple and easy to fix if needed.

Their main downsides are the short battery life of 20-30 minutes max and the fact that they have no screen of their own.

They can, if needed, be used as webcams and so if you connect it to a monitor you can see where you are actually aiming.

Some interesting points raised there, particularly about Russian police.

Ill look into the go pro series of cameras, multiple uses seems like a good idea and ill need battery life to last a little longer than 30 mins seeing as most journeysi do are at least a few hours.

Any further points welcome!  :tu:
