New Bread Machine on its way.
on: March 15, 2013, 03:24:32 PM
After about a decade using our old Oster bread machine, the last few loaves have been pretty dismal.  Poor mixing, a little weak on the baking and it only got worse when we tried to modify the recipes.  :(

The last loaf was the last straw.  I inspected it every step.  It looked like it was going to be perfect.  At the end, the bread was doughy and too yeasty.

So, yesterday we decided to replace it.

This is the new machine (coming):

A Zojirushi.  Besides bread, it will do cakes, make jam and even cook meatloaf (if one so desires  ::)).

I'm hoping for at least a 10 year run with the new machine, but we shall see...

Absolutely!

We do it one of two ways, depending on the recipe.

I put everything in right after dinner and pull the bread out just before bed OR (and a much better way!) I put all the ingredients in some time after dinner and set the timer so the bread is done just after we get up in the morning...

how long does it take and what's the cost like?

I've always looked at them and thought them a bit silly when you can buy decent bread in the shops, but my local "supermarket" seems to struggle to stock loaves that have a BBE date further away than tomorrow which is quite irritating, and bread takes up loads of space in my freezer. I guess making, if you can call it that, my own would mean I always had a fresh loaf.

This one is a bit expensive, but then I know we'll use it a couple times a week.  Basic machines can be had for about $70.

What makes them a value is the quality.  Most of our recipes are just water, butter, salt, sugar, flour and yeast.  It may vary in the type of oil/fat, kind of flour or add fruit and nuts.  No other additives.

But that means it will go stale faster than store bought.  It's the bread equivalent of why people home-brew.

Don't bother with those basic ones, I have a B&D machine and the axle seal on the tub gave out right after warranty is gone so stuff leaked down and seized the rotor. Called B&D and a new tub cost more than what I paid for the machine...

Besides the machine bread isn't nearly as tasty as hand made French loaf, I actually bought a kitchenaid to knead dough but that turned out to be crap too, but that's story for another time.

Our old one was an Oster Expressbake. It was a pretty nice, fairly basic unit.

Omg! a "Zojirushi!" that is suppose to be one of the best ones! and eeeexpensive... :ahhh

please tell me how it works because I have been looking at them.

I also like (and seriously thinking about) the Panasonic model (auto yeast adder) because apparently in the UK it's very popular and has good reviews.

but you got yourself a sideways/regular loaf machine! :D

can you do custom times/temps on yours?

That's interesting, my mum uses one of those with the GF bread kits you get on prescription and they usually seem to turn out OK. That said I'm very glad I can eat proper bread!

This one comes with gluten free recipes and a gluten free setting.  Personally, I'm a glutton for gluten.

I have a bread machine. The brand?¿? It's called my wife. We had a joke years ago that bringing a bread machine home meant that one of us was wanting a divorce.

We had a bread machine that someone gifted us when we first got married.  We'd get on a kick and make fresh bread a lot and then sometimes put it away for a year or so, before getting it back out.

One day it committed suicide and threw itself off the counter.  :((

Often thought it would be nice to get another one.  Maybe it's finally time.  That was over ten years ago.    :D

I love bread machines.  I haven't used mine in years, but there is absolutely nothing like waking up to the smell of fresh baked bread.  Maybe coffee works the same, but I don't drink coffee so that doesn't have the same effect on me.

The other problem is that we never ate the whole thing and we'd end up with half a loaf go bad since it doesn't last long.

In my younger days my brother and I used to eat a lot of pizza and we used the bread machine to make the dough for us.  Nowadays I prefer to make the dough by hand, although I admittedly don't make as much pizza as I used to.

Heating element in the lid gives a crispier, browned top than the Supreme.

I'd make a smaller loaf.  A lot of machines will let you choose (1 or 1.5 lb or sometimes up to 2 lb loaves).

I also prefer to make pizza dough by hand.  Same is true for doughnut dough and sweet roll dough.  But then, my dad was a baker, so I prefer to feel what the dough is doing for those special "once in a while" occasions.

The bread machine is just so convenient. 5 minutes of adding ingredients and I'm back to reading a book! :)

I don't usually stop reading while cooking.  I often have an ebook on my Nexus or phone and read while I do just about everything.  I have a painfully overactive imagination (what today would probably be considered ADHD) and reading is one of the few things I can do to get all of my synapses firing in the right order.  Otherwise I get too distracted to do most simple tasks.

(wonders if Grant has a "e-book" device thread somewhere  :P we have like 4 of them now!)

what I'm reading more and more is people are buying the mixers for the dough (instead of hand kneeding)
and then forming and baking in regular ovens.

problem is those heavy-duty mixers are just as expensive as the bread machines, you just have more control when you bake yourself.

I personally like machines, like you said Mr Whippy a few minutes of your time and then it's smelling and eating time!

what I'm reading and hearing now is most of the newer machines are pretty quiet and do a good job on many types of breads. Interesting your from a bakers family, I bet you have some good breads/recipes to make!

share please! :D

I was into ebooks before they were cool.... I have been reading them since my original Palm IIIe device, followed by a Palm M125, then a Sony Clie, then a Palm Tungsten E, then an iPAQ before switching to reading on an HTC Touch Smartphone, then an Android Smartphone and now I do most of my reading on my Nexus 7.  I'd say it's been at least 10 years that I've been reading ebooks.

I loved Palm.  They were the little company that could for years.... and they succeeded.  It's too bad they were unable to stay relevant.  It's the same story with BlackBerry, but I liked Palm and at least they had the decency to die out while BB is still lingering on...

Palm!  :(

I have a motorcycle diagnostic code scanner AND tuner which allows reseting the service indicator, rezero's the TPS, sets CO percentage in the exhaust (with an exhaust sniffer), checks the injectors, the coils, battery strength and a couple other things BUT:

It only talks to my old PalmPilot IIIxe (or whatever it is!). If that thing ever dies, I'm going to have to plump bigtime to replace the scanner/tuner. :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh

At least with a machine you do not have to worry about the mess

Seriously, who would choose that over a nice efficient machine?
