Oh no... not another one of these kind of threads...

*sigh*

Of course, it's really based on needs and personal preference, so for me, it's my Work Champ.  While it doesn't have "real" pliers, I could carry it every day and it would cover 95% of the tasks I need to take care of day to day.

We did that before? Who won?

Well, if there was a best we wouldn't have an excuse to buy 2, 22, 222 or more, right?

Furthermore, there are situations where you need the most implemented tools (this rises the possibility to have the specific tool needed for your task) and again, situations where something lighter and smaller helps with carrying and handling.

Also, SAKs contain tools no plier based multitool does. And plier based tools contain a real set of pliers and, some times longer tools (useful with saws).

Then again, with the exception of the Cybertool, some plier based Multitools have flexible options, like the LM bit driver and LM and Gerber jigsaw holder.

So I would choose both a SAK and a MT. I didn't try everything but the Leatherman Surge and Swisschamp XLT fulfill my needs.

Finally, if we inspect the question in general, I would have to admit that, mechanically, the best multitool ever invented is the human hand and the best cybernetic tool (or iTool one might say) is the human brain. These two combined made all the other tools that are and will invent and manufacture all the rest that will be in the future.

Finally, if we inspect the question in general, I would have to admit that, mechanically, the best multitool ever invented is the human hand and the best cybernetic tool (or iTool one might say) is the human brain.

An average human brain has 10^11 individual neurons.  Each of those has an average of 700 synapses with other individual neurons.  Some, like those in prefrontal cortex, where it seems executive decision making happens, only have a few dozen connections, while others, like Purkinje fibers in the cerebellum, can have 25, 30, even 35,000 synapses with other neighboring neurons.  Average them all out; 700.  Neurons also change their own connections; known as neural plasticity, neurons will reabsorb an axonal or dendritic structure, and build a new one somewhere else, making a new connection with a different other neuron than before.  Consider the average human lifespan to be about 74 years, and use a small correction factor for necrosis, because neurons die all the time, every day, and we find the average human brain typically has 10^14 individual synapses at any one moment in time, and over the average lifespan of a human the brain has the potential to form 10^800 different synaptic connections.  Now, consider that best estimates from astrophycists as to the total amount of matter in the universe are at 10^42 basic particles; protons, neutrons, and electrons.

Compare those two numbers; think about it.  The human brain is the most complex phenomenon we know of.  By several orders of magnitude.

That's a beautiful pic man :tu:

Didn't we just have this discussion a few days ago on another thread?  No biggie, I can discuss this any day :)  I can't pick one favorite, or else I'd only be carrying one MT (which many know is a habit I don't practice ;)).  I have my "Big 3" which consists of the Charge TTi, Rebar and Spirit.  Each one of those is different in terms of design, and I enjoy each one.  I can't really pick one out of those 3, so consider them all as "one".

I have the same mentality as kkokkolis in that I would go with one MT and one SAK (at the very least).  I EDC a Pioneer, and that's the only SAK I always have on me, but I know that functionally it's not as robust as say, the Explorer (another fave SAK of mine).  However, it's an easy one to pocket carry in anything, and it really has enough functionality to cover the majority of what I need in a day.  You could break SAKs down to cellidor and alox though, and my ideal alox would probably have at least one more layer, but I'm still somewhat undecided as to exactly which implements to add.  My ideal cellidor would be basically a Yeoman with the metal saw/file added.

I should add that I also have a couple personal faves that don't get carried as much, and so far, this list consists of the PSTII and Juice KF4.  These are more due to their retired status and just being MTs that I want to own for that reason.  I also want the Original Wave and have been considering the PST (just so I have one to go with my PSTII) and lately have been thinking about the Pulse, even though I know it's basically just a PSTII with locking tools, albeit with some design updates.  I seem to have a thing for retired Leathermans I guess

i agree with Def and kkokkolis ( pairing a plier based MT and a SAK ).  there was a time where i carried (2) vise grip, mini hack saw, metal file, knife, #2 philips, jewelers drivers, picks, pry type bar and other assorted things. i didnt use all items but i sure was nice to not have to go back and forth to my truck.  after getting a cheapo multi i was forever changed tho admittedly it came up short and i still had to pair it. now any opportunity to carry serveral multi purpose tools im in expecially when they take up less space and cover what i need.  today will be my wave and wingman since i know ill need dual pliers i may throw in my recruit jus because.

That's funny because I think that's how my collection is going to end.  Once I get my wish list items of retired Leathermans and a couple SAK mod jobs done (this will take some time though), I'm thinking that will be it.  Somehow though, I bet I'll be wrong ;)

More Leathermans are going to live on their pension as time goes by. So, collecting retired tools will never end.

I'm now the proud owner of a Bladeless Blast, Wave, SOG Powerlock and have just had a Victorinox Spirit delivered. To my way of thinking the Spirit isn't a multitool, more a work of art. IT'S BRILLIANT!

Yeah, but the time I have acquired the few items I want, there will probably be another new one out that I'll want or something that I will make me want something else.  It's a vicious cycle, but one I enjoy >:D

Okay, I know I'm going to regret this for mentioning it, but my experience with SAKs is that, *ahem*, in general, their implements are better designed, have better F&F, and are easier to use than those in pliers based MTs.  They're also usually smaller, lighter, and less expensive.

As for the saw thing, as far as I know, the largest saw on any pocketable MT/SAK on the market is the saw on the Wenger Ranger models.  *poof*... that one goes down in flames!     :D
