SAKs & Wives
on: April 22, 2013, 04:28:49 PM
The day of reckoning has come. Admit it already. Yes I am talking to YOU. No, don't gaze away the screen. You know you do it: YOU HIDE YOUR SAK ADDICTION FROM YOUR WIFE.

You buy SAKs without her knowing. You plan the delivery of your new SAKs at times when shes not home. Yes you do. However, you know that someday, that dreaded day will come when she will find out. Uhm, honey, where did all these knives come from? She will say. And when she does, you know you'll be into deep shiite cuz that will be the day when it will happen: either SAKs or SEX. The more SAKs you get from that point on, the less SEX you'll get. Yes SAKs are saksy but they are not sexy ( at least not in that way ...). And no, no amount of nice pictures of SAKs you msee in this site, albeit it being knife porn, will suffice your needs.

I dont post much in this forum, I am merely a lurker. However it dawned on me that since i started frequenting this forum 6 months ago I have bought 6 more SAKs. That's one SAK a month. I seriously have to stop cuz I really just passed that fine line of her knowing that " he has a few of those swiss knives" to " he has many". She only knows of one outta my last 6 purchases, and she wasn't  that thrilled about it. If she knew of the other 5...Yes, buying them didn't break the bank but still is not like we dont have other priorities atm. I have a nice DSLR and macro lens, been wanting to take awesome pictures of my collection to contribute to this forum ( just bought a rare Huntsman Digital Desert Camouflage itching to show off), but can't cuz afriad of getting caught with my collection while doing it. 6 months ago I only had 4 victorinoxes, more thanenough for what I need I thought. Now  6 more SAKs in 6 months and I have purposely stayed away from Alox. I am restraining myself cuz I know from your experiences that Alkx is the point of no return.

So I'm gonna lead by example. The first thing is to recognize having a problem:

My name is EtherealityX1 and I hide SAKs from my wife.

Would love to hear some of your strategies to deal with SAKs and wives. How have you gotten out of the doghouse when the day of reckoning has fallen upon you??? ( uhm, kinda a dumb question in this forum... Guess you pried open one of the wood planks of the dog house with the bottle opener of your farmer and then used its saw to cut your way out huh?)

Welcome to the forum :salute:  As for the topic:

I do not hide my addiction as I am unable to purchase anything without her finding out.  We don't keep any separate accounts, and the money we make all goes into one account.  We both monitor the account almost daily, and there is no way to hide a purchase without it coming into question fairly quickly.  Plus, we don't have enough money for me to get away with a purchase without it being noticed as we have to make our pay last for two weeks as we get paid bi-weekly.

However, I do prefer to take pics when she's in bed or not around as she thinks it's silly that I like to do that and post them here.  I did hide that I was a member here for the first few months until just a few weeks ago, but it wasn't really hiding as it's not something that came up, I just never mentioned it.  I had to mention it at that time because someone here was selling a couple Leatherman Juice Kf4's and I really wanted to grab one while I had the chance.  I have to use her smartphone (I don't have one yet, but will within a couple months) for any pic posting using Tapatalk.

So she's well aware of my addiction (although she calls it an obsession since I like to take pics and am a member here), but as a result, she's actually more receptive to times when I really want to buy something.  Now that she understands I am really interested in multitools/SAKs, she knows it makes me happy to be able to get one every so often as long as we can spare the cash.

Interesting topic though, and good luck as we all know the wife eventually will find out ;)  Also, you are right on about this site:  it leads to multiple purchases that you may or may not have ever considered had you not come here >:D

 well I use to hide my addiction as well as watches, she never noticed different watches and she isn't interested in mt's  :D but I did use to try and time my inbound packages, after all these years she has got use to it, she knows I mainly trade stuff and all I touch of our money is postage,i don't miss those days of hiding stuff and she even knows roughly what i have these days, she gets mt's / sak. But she don't like knives, but she's cool as knows it keeps me happy  :tu:

I have hidden the packages coming in or hoping that they show up on days that she isn't home.  But still, she knows they are coming in and she eventually sees the bills that I am buying them, but she doesn't mind this as my hobby.

In reality though, I discovered on my own that I have a problem and it is far more disturbing to me.   It started this past Christmas when my brother in law asked me how many knives I had and I couldn't answer.  It got worse, when I started realizing that when I went through my collection looking for the one I couldn't put my hands on ( I have the box) and it worries me that I left it in a car that I sold (even though I distinctly remember taking it out of it's hidden compartment).

The last straw has been when I went through the collection looking for it and found 3 that I don't even remember getting (buying, trading, etc.)  Then, this weekend, I found a receipt for one that I bought and I don't remember it but found it pretty quickly in my stash.

I remember someone saying all these things when I first started lurking here and I laughed to myself a little bit.

Hi, My name is Mud and I have a problem.

Put them in multiple places that are out of the way, and if discovered your stash will never be in its full glory.  Only combine it when it the coast is clear.

I urge you to go down the alox hole, stick to red or silver and you should be ok.  A cadet, pioneer, farmer and alox classic are all you REALLY need.  Know that the color ones scratch and chip unless you go the Syph HAIII route, and if you can't justify normal saks, you for sure can't justify mods (so no worries).  If the above 4 are too much, get either a cadet and farmer (best of both worlds) or a pioneer/SI (good compromise).

Cheers

My wife knows I'm nuts, but happens to find my SAK's useful!  :tu:  Luckily she doesn't care how many SAK's or MT's I have, but doesn't want me spending a ton of money on them.  Honestly, I've probably not spent much more than $100 on everything I have, but that's only because I buy at our airports chapel sales where they sell confiscated items for dirt cheap.  An alox SAK is only $3 there!

Also, Gig's deal has had the reverse psychology affect on me of mostly freeing me from my ebay fixation:

I had created a few tricks to find cool stuff on lebay, but his sak mojo is so much greater than mine- it was liberating.

Welcome to the forums. That's a good topic. Funny you should mention it today
My wife understands I like knifes and hatchets, her dad and I do share some interests. I guess that helps, although she calls it an obsession. I only stack SAKs. She knows I've got some but doesn't care to know more and trusts in my good sense I suppose. I keep mine groupped in small cigar boxes scattered around the house and I've got the ones I use placed where I want them. I just try not to show too much and that's all. However, I don't know how things will evolve  >:D

I tried hiding astronomic equipment from my wife or making her believe it cost about half the actual price in the past. Eventually she always noticed every single addition to my collection but I am not sure about prices, so I asked the local forum that, when I die, they shouldn't pay for my equipment what she thinks it's cost is but the then used market prices, if she or my kids decide too sell anything.
I didn't do the same thing with my SAKs in the same extend, because I don't have much and I use everything I have. She paid for my Surge (as she did for my Cadet and 2 of my Swisschamps, most of my pipes, lighters, watches, bicycle etc) and she was very pleased that I carved her name on my XLT. She wants me to  be happy and at  times she asked me to spend for myself because she was guilty that I work so long hours and put almost all my  money in the house and kids. We share  our wallet, I just keep 200-300 euros a month for making presents to her, my kids and myself and give her all the rest. That way I am sure that the money will be spent right.
She just can't imagine what a telescope or premium eyepiece might cost. On the other hand, prices between 30-100 euros for a nice SAK are understandable for her. So she should be pleased that I finally equiped myself fully for amateur astronomy (well, almost) and now I spend much less for multitools. The recent financial breakdown of my country doesn't permit much anyway.
I adore my wife.

No not a problem I have.  In a typical week I get 10+ packages all knife related.  Parts, donors, knives for my collection etc.  My wife (and our mail lady) is just used to it by now.  When I come home she'll say you got more packages and here they are.  If anything she's jealous cuz she doesnt get exciting mail.  All my knives in my collection are in a large tool chest in my man cave, so they arent hidden in any way.  I have no other vices really since I gave up drinking a few years ago, so I gotta put my money into something fun.  She knows I do for hire mods too, so its bidirectional flow of money.  I think the only time shes give me that look is if I buy bulk lots of knives.. like one box with 15 pioneers in it...

I do have a friend who times ebay purchases for when his wife isnt there.  I looked at his account and he had bought 60+ items in the last month on ebay.. Id say thats out of hand, and those are all hide from the wife type things.

TRUE...not married...but my girlfriend & I share the same house... and she gives me sooo much flak for doing anything knife related... so all my monthly eBay & Amazon knife purchases which totals to i guess around $700/mo are delivered to a secret place... then I get them when the coast is clear.

kinda fun sometimes

Wow man, how do you manage to hide or explain $700 gone a month?  I wish I could spend that kind of dough each month and no one notice ;)  Heck, my whole collection probably cost only a little more than that much :ahhh

One way to shrug off some of the aggro is to buy cadets and give them to her family and friends' husbands/boyfriends.  People really really love cadets!  This way you can instill in her a greater appreciation for saks.

A cheap source of cadets (use the 10% off SWISSARMY code as well to make them ~$17.50 with free shipping):

well the cost of housing and transportation and food is actually very affordable in the Philippines...so I scrimp even further getting an apartment that's just walking distance from work, then I don't eat, I don't buy clothes, or shoes and I buy cheap beer and even cheaper cigarettes then spend everything on knives and camping gear and stuff... and we usually keep our finances separate but she keeps on bugging my cause I don't take her out on dinner dates...well...i guess you know the answer as to why...but my collection is tiny. I'm just starting. because having to get all of my stuff from the states usually costs me a lot on shipping and customs duties... but it's a passion... and having that shiny piece of steel and polymers is just so damn addictive :multi:
