Awesome market analysis jazzbass!  :tu:

I hope that this collector is on some forum or other so folks like us can appreciate his (or her) collection.

Although I can't personally justify such extravagances, it is enjoyable to see the rare pieces and collections and particularly the custom mods I see here on this forum.  :tu:

Thanks. This thread here: http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,44997.0.html is a good example of the price inflation thing I was talking about. A couple years ago this knife would have been discussed on the forums for selling for $100 because that was a lot. Today it's considered a bargain. People's expectations have been reset - $100 is now the minimum for a nice exposed rivet knife it seems.

BTW, for those who are new to this, we went through a similar price inflation bubble at in late 2009/early 2010. Alox prices went nuts. Before that you cold get almost any old alox knife for < $100. All of the sudden anything with red scales and a white cross started selling for $200 minimum. That bubble eventually popped, but old alox prices never came back down below $100.

We're also starting to see the same thing happen now that we did then - a bunch very collectible knives hitting eBay at very high prices. People are hoping to cash in on the latest price bubble, and I don't blame them at all - I have several knives sitting here as trade fodder (including a NIB 1940s Spartan) than I'm thinking should hit eBay. It's typical supply/demand econ stuff - the rise in prices brings many knives out of collector's collections that they probably had no intention of selling. If i can sell a $70 knife I bought for $90, why bother? After eBay fees I barely got my money back. Sell the knife for $400-$500? That's hard to pass up. The only problem is that the SAK collecting market is very small, and it doesn't take long for the big money buyers to either get everything they want or get bored and move on.

I got the Voyageur from a girl in Canada. It was a BIN for $10 and $4 shipping. I was ready to chop it up for the 84mm scissors when I realized it was worth more than $10.

http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,21658.3150.html

Near bottom. I was wrong it was $8.

Obviously I need to start selling on eBay again. Some of these monster sales were purchased from me recently for $70 and $80.  :twak:

I am gutted I have just found this hobby - I so wish I was in to SAK's years ago. Not being able to buy and sell on eBay in the UK does not help either :( - still am glad I have found a great forum with some great people - worth more than any knife :)

Ditto here Ross. It is the nature of the beast though, you always wish you had started earlier and even if I had the tools I want there will always be more to want.

Hey, if I had listed it on eBay I not only would have sold it already it would have sold for a lot more that what I'm asking. Others like it have sold for more on eBay. 99% of the limited editions and hard to find items I sell go for a fraction of what these are going for on eBay now so why are you giving me noise?

In case you hadn't noticed, Tim's auctions are for his charity and if people are willing to pay more for certain Alox knives at the moment, why the hell shouldn't he make every penny he can?

Thats rigth, Tim sold me (in the way home) 7 NIB collectible Pioneer and a Sea Rancher, a very affordable price, if he put those SAk on Ebay, in Jimmylee era, he could get three time the price I paid, thats for sure.

Not just any charity I will point out but for the kitties.  I personally want to see him raise the most possible dollars to help out these felines.

jazzbazz, do you have any logged events of a Duchess on Ebay?

I've been looking for one for a while now and haven't seen one pop up anywhere. How limited are these?

Dutchess - 58mm Classic w/ cutout scales? They're pretty rare with a frequency of 80 (one shows up for sale every 80 days). Dutchess Escorts are more common (but still hard to find) with a frequency of 40.

:o  I can't imagine spending that kind of money on something like that.  Nice collector's piece I'm sure, but I'd have to be quite well off to buy it for $10k+.
